Fieldcraft Wilderness Cabin DIY?

Anybody build there own log cabin in the wilderness(or private property)? I would think this would be a good idea and skill set.
I was told some wilderness areas you can build a trapper cabin as long as it only has 3 sides. Maybe somebody has more info on the subject.

I did. When I first moved to Alaska I'm '72 working on the railroad I was sent to Healy. There was no place to live so I squated on RR land buildings cabin.

It was 12x12 feet. Lived in for two years with wife and two young children.

Sold the cabin for $500 ( didn't own the land) when I went to anchorage to work for APD

I have not, however, I can think of no greater inspiration than Richard Proenneke. If you have heard of him then this is old news, If you have not...Google "Alone in the wilderness"

A good start. I read it many years ago as a (pre-)teenager. It motivated me to an avocation that included hiking, canoeing, and over 40 years in Scouting.

Post and beam companies and several timber frame sites have great plans or frames to buy. On the cheap a 40 foot container for cheap with a roof added and a wood stove could be useful.

+1 big time for Alone in the Wilderness. Old school hard work and ingenuity. I own it on DVD along with the second one, although the first one is the best.
