Will a new barrel fix a long throat?

Hello Everyone,

I have a Remington 700 PCR in .308 and it measures out 2.9385 while my mag can only load 2.815 without feed issues. I have been doing load development and comparing accuracy when loaded to mag length vs twenty thousandths off the lands and the latter has been considerably more accurate. I would like the ability to load from mag but still get all the accuracy I can out of the rifle. Is there a way to fix this problem? I figured if I purchased a new barrel I would be able to correct that. Is that a good assumption or should I go down a different route?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a happy new year!

To answer your question, yes. Having a new barrel spun up and installed with the proper reamer will fix your long throat issue...AICS mags will get you out to 2.88 or so but AW can get you farther but would need to notch the feed ramp. Some frown upon this because it changes the structural integrity of the action, others do it all the time. Depends who you ask.

For what its worth, I had zero issues running 178 Amax at max mag length of 2.88 or so with IMR4064 in my factory 5R 308. Shot lights out. 175smk didnt mind the jump either down around 2.825...

As has been said, a new barrel will fix the issue, but most smiths won't hang a new barrel without truing the action (after all, their name is associated with the job). So, you're talking 300-350 for the barrel, another 200 or so to thread and chamber, another couple of hundred (at least) to work on the action.
You could have the barrel taken off, set back a bit, then rechambered.
The smith should skim the face of the receiver, lap your lugs and square the shoulder.
I believe that Robert would do this for you:

Run a binderless Accurate mag and you'll have 2.980ish avaliable COAL.

So this mag will work on my gun? and in order to get the longer bullets to feed I just need to notch the feed ramp? That sounds a lot cheaper and easier then a new barrel.

By the way, thank you for all the fast replies! It's greatly appreciated

Yes, the Accurate mags are AICS pattern. It should fit in your rifle.

Notching the feed ramp can be done yourself if you're confident or crazy enough. If not, you can send it to a smith. LRI does the notch all the time and their turnaround is super quick on it.

I dont have much gun experience but have plenty of steel and machining experience. So as long as I can find info or a video or something showing what to do I wont have a problem. Most likely can figure it out once the mag arrives and I see where it catches on the feed ramp.

Thanks again! such a great forum

I notched mine myself. I can send you a pic of mine when I get off work to show you what it looks like

As Mark said... The Accurate runs in any AICS BM.

Must fall in the crazy dept. Did all 3 of mine with the barreled action pulled out of the stock and a dremel. The 3 actions have 4500ish rounds on them and I've never experienced any of the "internet " problems out of any of them.

Not true. Dismiss this OP.
You might as well talk crap about his car or maybe his mother while you’re at it too.

Has Remington picked up their QC as of recently? Have they finally started turning out quality guns? If they have then ignore my statement. But the last time I went rifle shopping the Remington's I looked at still seem to be the same trash that Remington has been turning out for the past few years. And quit a few people I shoot with have had issues with their rifles out the box.

I understand you don’t like Remingtons, but if you are just going to talk trash about the choice I made please keep your comments to yourself.

Did not have the money to go with a custom action first go around. Myself and two friends just got into long range shooting so we decided to get three different brands. Believe it or not they both like my Remington over there tikka and howa. I did Switch out my trigger though.
