Will any Pda work for ballistic software?

So I am looking at a ballistic program and have used the search here for some info. I am thinking about grabbing a pda and loading a ballistic program on it, but I am pretty out of it computer wise. I know I could use an Iphone, but I don't have one and it isn't in the budget.

There are lots of pda's out there and I am not sure if they are like computers- need a certain program (some sort of windows?) to run ballistic software.

Anyone able to give me a quick techno lesson on this?

Thanks,
Jethro

You have to check the PDA software, but really there are only a couple of choices,

Basically you have two kinds,

Those on a chip, usually an SD card, and those that are installed from the desktop.

If the PDA has a slot for an SD card you can run those, plus the installed type, if it doesn't have the right card slot you are limited to the installed types.

The two I recommend are

Field Firing Solutions from Lex Talus ---> SD Card Type

Patagonia Ballistics ColdBore -------> Installed to include Desktop companion.

There are a couple of others but these are the two I recommend.

I would look for a used Ipod touch or even a new one. You dont need a lot of memory on it then just get a program to run on that. I see new 4th gen ipod touches on amazon for $175.

Re: Will any Pda work for ballistic software?

Sure it can. You have a couple options.

#1 - Used Ipod touch, maybe $100, load BulletFlight or Ballistic FTE on it for $20-$30 more.

#2 - More complex, Kindle Fire Tablet, have to figure out how to hack the OS and load a generic android one (google will help), then buy Applied Ballistics program from Bryan Litz for $30.

#3 - Save some more money ($5-600), but the Kestrel 4500 with Horus Atrag, it really works quite well and is both the weather station and ballistics calculator in one.

Another Android alternative is something like a Motorola ET1 "enterprise tablet" running Shooter or the Applied Ballistics app:

This doesn't have quite the robustness of a Trimble Recon, but it's a lot tougher than the typical consumer tablet.

If you go to the field firing solutions web site, the recommend which pda's to use and if that doesn't answer your question, call them and ask any question.

Re: Will any Pda work for ballistic software?

FFS will only run on the Trimble Nomad (NOT THE RECON) and the Getac. For 200 you can't buy much. Use a phone app as its the most viable in your situation.
FFS alone is close to $400.00 just for the software.
