Can a crf winny be setup to accept prefits or done in a way that a new barrel could be installed by the user ( assuming Smith has origional dimensions from blueprinting/chambering).?

The extractor cut complicates that. Theoretically, you could remove the extractor from the bolt, set the headspace and then mark the barrel for the extractor cut. You’d then have to send the barrel out to be cut and reinstall. I’m sure if anyone would be willing to play that game with you it would be Chad at LRI.

Edit:
I believe the barrel would also need to be machined with a coned breech for the bolt head before setting headspace. Kinda sounds like a pain in the dick. ??‍♂️

I asked a very similar question a bit back, here is that thread. LRI commented on it and basically said that it would not be able to be done, only that he could have a quick turn around if all parts were in hand.

I too thought if a smith had the action and barrel in hand then they could time it so prefits FROM THAT PARTICULAR smith could work.

It's not very classy, and I don't know its effect on feeding, but it may be possible to do a flat breech face on a prefit. Cut the face flat at the same spot you'd do the extractor cut.

The rub may come down to case exposure.

If one were to make a tool that was basically an action face with a protractor engraved around it he could then measure and record the timing of the extractor cut once they had completed the first barrel with a particular action in hand. But that would only help if the customer re ordered from that particular Smith for that particular action.

If through the use of CNC precision the thread timing on the tool could be controlled so that all tools produced measured the same timing position, then it could be possible for multiple smiths to build to the same spec if using the same brand of tool to measure.

Probably way too much work for such a small audience but just in case Chad decides to pick up this idea and run with it I’m willing to discuss a royalty agreement. ;)

One could 86 the cone and go to a flat breech. The case exposure won't be anymore or less because you cut the 90* at the base of the taper anyway. Feeding concerns shouldn't be that big of an issue because a CRF action should be presenting the full case head to the bolt face before the cartridge engages the breech face anyway.

The bigger issue at hand here that hasn't been mentioned is the thread tennon. A typical M70 only has around .750" or so of threaded joint. The 60* cone on a .480" bolt face consumes roughly 1/3rd of that thread length. Chopping off the cone results in only around a 1/2" or so of thread engagement with the receiver. It might work, but when you look at the broad spectrum of receivers out there today, I am not aware of too many running the business end of the barrel that short.

Probably not the best solution...

Chad, I am planning on sending it to you either way to do your magic.

I was able to pick up one of the CRF FN PBR actions from mgw and not sure if A. The PBR's needs blue printing and B. What the options are for prefits/non traditional barrel setups for the winnys. It sounds like I may be up shits creek as far as the barrels are concerned?

I have all the parts ready to go, just need to decide what I'm actually going to do and what is needed.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone.

Seems to me that if one had plenty of cash to expend on a project like this, the answer MIGHT be a chambered barrel extension that a barrel would be threaded into (I believe that something has been done for push feeds already). You would only have to replace the barrel portion.
