Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I have a model 52 D that I have had in the gun safe for about 40 years. It has more years on it than that though. I bought it in the 70s and it was an old CMP rifle. It shot well enough for me when I shot small bore in the 70s. I would like to put a scope on this rifle and I am wondering if you folks had suggestions on where I might begin my search for scope mounts or a rail. Thanks

Hey Cap,
52D's are sweet shooting rifles. What type of scope you want to mount?
Depending on the type of scope, try EGW for the rail or Champions Choice to start (and I think Brownells too).

I only have Unertls, Lymans and Redfield irons on mine so the factory blocks covered my needs.

Here is my SH win 52 thread I started here:

post a pick of your 52 when you get a chance.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I have had the same problem with an H@R model 12 that is a tack driver with peep sights so i bought a Unertl last night on ebay.
Problem is the are very expensive like usually between $650 and $1500 and certian model can go as high as $5000

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I was thinking of something pretty conventional like a 4-12x40. Mostly for club matches (novelty matches such as paint ball shoots, bingo shoots etc at 100 yards). I was looking at a Vortex in this configuration.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I have the EGW rail mount for mine. Its well made and fits snugly. I have yet to mount optics, but the mount is a good price and appears as though it will do its job nicely. I got mine from EGW on E-bay and it was significantly cheaper from them through that venue.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

The receiver has multiple holes - some of which are plugged and some not..I will contact the above folks. Thank you for the information.

Capt,
Your 52 has the holes to mount either base.

Both will work, the EGW / Vianni bases just came up here:

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

Actually I must have been thinking of my old Winchester 75 as being full of holes. The 52 D only has the rear Redfield installed and two very forward scope mounting blocks that I guess were used for the old very long Unertl scopes. Do the EGW and the Viele require holes to be drilled or is there some way that it clamps on? The EGW site does not have a picture and I can not tell on the other one.

CH,
Your D has the mount holes you need for either base.

The EGW uses the 2 holes closest to the receiver on the barrel only. These holes are where the rear scope block would sit for the Unertl type scope.

The Vanni uses the same holes as the EGW and also attaches to the block on the left rear side of the receiver that you mount your Rear Redfield International or Olympic Micrometer Site to.
I dont know if he supplies the rear block with the 2 holes in it or you have to mod yours, but it looks like a Redfield (Part # W670) Rear Attachment Block with 2 additional holes in it.
The 2 rear holes in the rear block are shown in the link IES supplied above (identified as win52 mount pic#2).

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

The Vanni seems a bit more secure, but since he is not making them anymore I ordered an EGW this morning. I hope that the part that is essentially cantalevered over the action is strong enough.

Thanks for your replies

BR,
To the best of my knowledge, all 52D's are in the heavy barrel configuration. They did not manufacture them in standard barrel weight and if there are any out there, they would be a custom order.
IES is right, Ken is making his bases again.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

The range report is basically good. As might be expected, the better the ammo, the better the group. Wolf target led the way with five shot group at 50 yards that was 0.25 inches. The next best was SK at 0.51 and then Federal at 0.61 inches.and American Eagle at 0.65". Eley Sport was about 0.75 most of the time. CCI blazer was about an inch as were some old Remington, and Winchester Wildcat loads. The Winchester Dynapoint held 4 shots under 1/2 inch, but there was a consistant flyer that brought the group to just under an inch.

Going to the range later this week I hope and do some 100 yard groups.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I forgot to mention that the EGW rail appeared to work just fine. It does not allow the scope to come to the rear as far as I would prefer, but still seemed pretty stable considering the set up.

Looking good Mat,
Nice to see a clean mod on a 52. Do it your self? If your willing, post some more picks of it at the post below, would love to see more of it.

CH,
Its a 52D, it will shoot the wolf just fine.
In stock configuration, I have found the D's will hold their own against very heavily modified and very expensive rigs.

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

Well here is the range report. I shot 5 four shot groups from benck with a front and rear rest at 100 yards in a mostly calm wind. I tossed out the worst group. My average with Wolf Target ammo was 1.1" with my 52D. I was a little dissapointed as I repeated the same test above with my CZ 455 and finished with 0.91" average. I was expecting better. Any suggestions from anyone?

Re: Winchester 52 D scope mount suggestions

I did not repeat the five - four shot groups that day. The barrel was dirty from a previous trip to the range and the prior 30- 40 rounds were Wolf Target, the same as in the test. I welcome suggestions on how this rifle may be tuned to shoot a little tighter. Someone mentioned to start adjusting the poundage on torquing the bolts into the reciever. I have tried that and would welcome some suggested process. During a previous trip to the range I shot about 8-9 different brands of ammo. Three of which were higher end ammo (e.g. Wolf, SK, and Ely). The Wolf shot the best and that is why I did the five four shot groups.
