I just picked up a mint 1968 vintage 30.06 model 70 mannlicther. Gun has the Willams back up peep. Also it has a leupold one piece mount with a leupy 2-7x scope. Question, what mount and ring selection is required so that the scope can be quickly detached so that I can use the iron sights? I like the quick detach rings but I'm no sure that the two piece mount will fit under the Willams rear sight. Thanks.

Re: Winchester 70 scope mount question

Leupold (QRW) and Warne (maxima) quick detach, are both sets that should fit the 70.

Also I would contact Williams, as some of the new rear peeps have a "notched" rail to fit over a weaver base. See if they recommend a certain base.

Several companies make a rear ghost ring that will fit the weaver base, but I'm thinking you want to keep the side mounted Williams because the wood has already been inlet.

Re: Winchester 70 scope mount question

Weaver mounts and rings work. I use them on my Model 70 1000 yard rifle where I have to switch between irons where I shoot bot Any Rifle/Any Sights and Any Rifle/Iron Sight.

Set it up in the early 80s and it still works today. Also have the same set up on my Model 70 Vietnam Era Sniper rifle clone.
