Go for it! The 300WM minimum barrel length would be 20" and I would suggest that you stick around the 24-28". Most custom barrels go for around $330, pick one and roll on. Manner's Stocks, can't beat 'em. CDI, as far as I know, they're the only game in town to offer the type of DBM it seems you're after. I've done a build off of one of these actions, and it shoots and functions perfectly.

<span style="color: #FF0000">Doing what you are talking about basically leaves you just using the action on your current rifle </span>and if you were going to choose an action to build on there might be better options. Just my opinion of course and if you want to build on that i'm sure it will work out, just might not be the most cost effective option. But that also depends on what you could sell your current rifle for.</div></div>
It's called using a donor action, and is done all the time. He already has the action, so what's not cost effective about that? </div></div>
I'm with you and understand, I was just thinking that he could get more $ out of the .338 whole and then buy another rifle/action for less $.
