Has anybody else had problems with winchester large rifle primers fitting loose. I am finishing up 1000 of them that i have pruchased about a year ago. It seems compared to federal 210s that take much less pressure to seat. I seated some in once fired lapua brass today and they seat way to easy for me. I thrown some lc brass and imi match away becuase of loose pockets and i am wondering if maybe its just the win primers

Well, there is a very slight difference in diameter but loose primer pockets tell you what you need to know and the best way to find out is by seating another primer. That's one thing you don't need is loose primers. If there is any question, I discard any that don't feel right. If it's a lot, I would think you would have noticed flattened primers, cratered or some indication before you got to the point of seating a new primer? BB

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

Its not the primers, the problem is the pocket has had a Federal primer seated and fired. Once you fire a Federal primer most everything else will fit a bit loose. Use some Federals in them and they will probably seat a bit tighter. Generally if the primer doesn't fall out of its own free will as long as the pocket holds the primer it will be fine. Switch back to Federals exclusively or switch to something else and stiick with them. You can't swap back and forth from Federals and something else. I have had this problem with lots of cases in the past when I had Federals and CCI on my loading bench.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

Usually this happens because of firing hot loads stretching the brass and enlarging the primer pocket.Wolf primers may fit a little tighter but likely the brass is about done.

After one firing with new Lapua? Wolf primers may indeed fit tighter and most of them may actually fire.

I have found the same issue.

WLR primers are loose compared to both the F210m and CCI large rifle primers.

This is with brass that has not seen hot loads either. I will not be buying anymore Win primers after these are used up.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

Psssh everyone gets scared about loose primers, not me. I have 100 rounds of .223AI that most of them I can seat the primer with my thumb. They are somewhere around their 9th firing, I keep them for prairie dogs now. Loose primer pockets come from excessively hot loads, mine were and they worked great. I never had a primer fall out though, even with them being as loose as they were.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

I had the same problem a couple monthes ago. Up until that point I have always used Winchester primers.

Primed/Loaded 45 rounds of 308 , using Winchester LRP using IMR-4064, pushing 175 SMK. Brass used was Winchester (2X fired, load @44.1), R-P (1x fired load @ 43.9), FGMM (1x fired Load @ 43.9). In short I had five primers that leaked. The first box of primers of a new case, priming tool used was a rcbs bench top. I have never had one primer leak before and then had five in one day ( FGMM x 1, R-P x 3, Win x 1) !!!!!!. After the fifth failure I quit shooting, I still have 9 more shells sitting next to my bullet puller. There was no signs of excessive case exspansion no hard extraction, no polishing from the ejector, no extractor marks, nothing, its the same recipe I have used for years.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

    Rubicon,

I've measured the blue box Winchester primers to compare them to the size of the old white box Winchester primers. The white box primers measure slightly more than 0.001" larger than the blue box primers. When Winchester started making the blue box primers, they did not compensate the lack of plating by increasing the primer cup size to match the size of the nickle plated cups. The cup for blue box is sized to be nickle plated but without the plating, so they tend to feel loose. You can try Wolf primers, they are similar to Winchesters in effect, but larger.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

Thats good information DocB. I dont mind the loose primers in a bolt gun, but they made me a little nervous when shooting my gas guns. I had some cases loosing the primers when they hit the cement after being ejected. I think i will pick up some cci or wolf.

    Re: Winchester Primers loose

Doc is right on the money with the changeover on the white vs blue box primers.

I still have a few thousand white box primers and they are reserved for my pair of 6 BR's because that is what I started their Lapua brass on.
