Im new to this, so please, take it easy on the new guy

When I load any calculator they always have a crosswind already set (the one Im using right now has: "Wind Direction is: 3.0 o'clock and a Wind Velocity of: 23.6 Kilometres per hour"- and thats preset, I didnt set that).

My question, until now I have always deleted wind values figuring that if I base my charts and stuff on calculations that are based on a windy day, that means Im going to be shooting slightly left, or slightly to the right to accomodate this non existant wind

I always thought its much better to get my calculations for zero wind and then make whatever adjustments I need when Im out in the field.

THat still seems like good logic to me.

But the fact that every single calculator I have ever used has a pre-set wind value---- thats making me question my logic. Right now Im in the middle of making some new charts for the new rifle.... and Im not sure whether to leave the crosswind in, or set it to 0 like I always do.

ANy advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Wind question about ballistic calcs

The easiest way to determine if your calc is compensating is to look at the elevation data at say 1K meters and then change the wind to "0" and see if the elevation data changes. If it doesn't then you can run your data w/ any wind speed you want and will have to figure out the compensation on the fly. If it does change then set your data to "0" then run a second set at a nominal number (23.6 kPh is roughly 10 mph IIRC) compare the diff and see if it's worth it to you to make 2 extra lines on your card for the change. Wind can be calculated linearly.

Cheers,
