Re: WINTER STORM BENEDICT
Dundee NY usually sits in 'a hollow' where we get bypassed by much of the snow. We're in West/Central NY, in Finger Lakes Wine Country; and our location is sorta strategically set where the Lake Effect snows pass around us when the customary wind patterns prevail.
This time we got some, but not a ton; maybe 4-5" and it's kinda tough to estimate because of wind and drifts. I spent most of the bad weather time in Florida the last two years, and it's taking me some time this year before I get thoroughly disgusted with the snow. Soon, I'm sure...
11 degrees, Wind Chill minus 1. Comfy indoors, bring on the Cabin Fever!
I installed plastic sheeting on the indoor side of all the windows; and my January utility bill went down 40% this year. We have 1880's style floor to ceiling windows. I make my own window jackets from clear 55gal Contractor bags and clear package sealing tape. Cost is nearly nothing. Takes about a half day to put up, and they peel right off come Spring.
My wife got us an electric snow thrower this year as a accomodation to my heart issues. Paid $60 on clearance. It's sorta like a glorified/electrified snow shovel. Dang, but that critter's neat! I just sorta push it and walk along behind it at a normal pace; and boy, does the snow up and fly away! We have an ultra heavy duty power cord, 100ft and 50ft add up to be quite long. It even blasts through the packed snowplow windrows in front of the driveway as long as I'm willing to invest a little patience.
I still end up pretty nackered afterward, but I can only imagine where I'd be at with a plain shovel anymore. We had pipe dreams about a gasoline powered snow blower this year, but the money just wasn't there. Seems to be a lot of that goin' aound lately....
Works!
