1:8 twist should work up to 75 gr bullets (depending on velocity)
1:7 twist for up to 80 gr bullets (77 gr Sierra in that category)
Not exactly true. A 1:8 will shoot the 75/77/80 just fine. So will the 1:7, but the 1:8 maybe a little more accurate with the 80s for across the course shooting with the AR (form 200-600yds), hence that is the most common barrel twist on the line in a service rifle Hipower match. The 1:7 or even 1:6.5 have been used with good effect for up to 90 grn bullets. I have encountered several 1:8 button rifled barrels are not really 1:8, more like 1:8.5 and they would not stabilize the 77/80s. The cut rifled barrels twists should be spot on, however.
The 1:7 has the mil-spec coolness factor, and that was to stabilize the longer tracer bullet, not the 62 grn ball.
