shot my first handloaded 45 auto rounds today. seems like a full circle sort of event, a completion of my years of training if you will. my original background in 1911's was nearly 20 years ago working with a qualification range cadre where "combat effective" accuracy meant keeping all your rounds on a large silhuette at various distances while moving to and from behind cover. not exactly precision work or scoring. which leads me to my question. what is a decent size group from a standard no frills 1911 fired from a rest with good handloads? i fired 2 groups today, one with factory and one with my loads at about 15 yards. results were both in the 3 inch area. seems pretty piss poor to me but this isnt a custom so am i expecting too much?

Re: workig man 1911 groups

I can't shoot anything smaller than 4'' at 25 yds to save my life, but I'm not much of a pistol shooter and never have shot any of my pistols in a rest. I don't bullseye shoot so I'm plenty happy with 4''.

Re: workig man 1911 groups

I would say most 5 inch 1911s would shoot 3 inches at 15 yds. WC, Ed Browns, RRA and SA Pros typically shoot 2 to 2.5 inch groups at 25 yds.

Yeh you might be expecting a little too much for something that is not a custom 1911.

Low cost 1911's don't really come out from the factories with fitted parts anymore.

Jeff beat me to it. I shot IDPA with some 1911's that would NOT do that well and placed pretty high in our local matches. Finally got around to having one tuned and tweeked and was 3rd in the state years ago.

You are in good shape. Now go practice!
