So I decided to chop my barrel down to 18" today and rethread. It was 22" and threaded 5/8-24 for suppressor with thread protector.
I didnt do the threading the first time around, so Im not sure how it was done. I never had a baffle strike so it must have been at least somewhat centered.
First off I had to remove the barrel from the action since the recoil lug wouldnt go through the headstock. After removing recoil lug I spun the action back on and tightened the nut up a little bit just to extend the barrel to the spider.
When indicating the bore, I had an indicator at the muzzle, and at the end of the rod, got it to within .001" across the whole rod. Now with that said, the outside of the barrel had to be 0.010" out! Bad enough that its clearly visible in the video attached below. I know this is normal sometimes, but whats weird is that it was not this bad the first time the barrel was threaded. I know this because threading the original protector on it is offset by about .010".
Is it normal for a bore to move around like that throughout the length of the barrel?

So I got it threaded and crowned and whatnot, just need to throw it in the 3jaw and make a new protector for it.
Next...
Since I have the action off I thought I'd try to true it up. This will be my first attempt at any action work so I wanted some advice.
I started by taking a ~15" chunk of 3/4" brass rod and turning it down to .703" so that it is a very snug fit in the action.
Is this the correct way to indicate an action in the 4jaw?
I assume I just want to take just enough material off the end so that it is flat right?
I plan on picking up a recoil lug from SharpShooterSupply monday as well as a new barrel nut.
Thats enough questions for now, if you have any other advice for me I'd greatly appreciate it, Im sure Ill have some more by tomorrow. Thanks.
