So I decided to chop my barrel down to 18" today and rethread. It was 22" and threaded 5/8-24 for suppressor with thread protector.

I didnt do the threading the first time around, so Im not sure how it was done. I never had a baffle strike so it must have been at least somewhat centered.

First off I had to remove the barrel from the action since the recoil lug wouldnt go through the headstock. After removing recoil lug I spun the action back on and tightened the nut up a little bit just to extend the barrel to the spider.

When indicating the bore, I had an indicator at the muzzle, and at the end of the rod, got it to within .001" across the whole rod. Now with that said, the outside of the barrel had to be 0.010" out! Bad enough that its clearly visible in the video attached below. I know this is normal sometimes, but whats weird is that it was not this bad the first time the barrel was threaded. I know this because threading the original protector on it is offset by about .010".

Is it normal for a bore to move around like that throughout the length of the barrel?

So I got it threaded and crowned and whatnot, just need to throw it in the 3jaw and make a new protector for it.

Next...

Since I have the action off I thought I'd try to true it up. This will be my first attempt at any action work so I wanted some advice.

I started by taking a ~15" chunk of 3/4" brass rod and turning it down to .703" so that it is a very snug fit in the action.

Is this the correct way to indicate an action in the 4jaw?

I assume I just want to take just enough material off the end so that it is flat right?

I plan on picking up a recoil lug from SharpShooterSupply monday as well as a new barrel nut.

Thats enough questions for now, if you have any other advice for me I'd greatly appreciate it, Im sure Ill have some more by tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: Working on my Savage 10

Nevermind on the last question. Had to drive down to Sharpshootersupply today to get a new barrel nut and recoil lug, while I was there Fred was nice enough to give me a bunch of advice. Included in that was the easiest way to true the face of a savage action.

I thought I took pics of it, but I guess not yet. Basically just threaded some barstock the same as the barrel threads, made a relief at both ends of the threads, one for the non threaded part of the receiver before the lug faces, and the other for a tool to fit in and face the action.

The threads were cut somewhat loose, and the end of the bar was faced off so that it would lockup against the lug face. Left it in the jaws the whole time and screwed the action on, faced it off, that easy.

For anyone having a hard time picturing it, the action is facing the spindle.

The thread protector is proving to be a pain since the bore is so off center at this point in the barrel. Once I finish that tomorrow hopefully itll go back together and get a report. I aquired a 308 no-go and field gage, not needing the field gage I just turned .007 off the back of it to make it a go gage.
