I just picked up a remington 5r in 308 and I am trying to find a good starting load. I have read several post on 308 using the components I have but was wondering if anyone has any data on this gun. I have 168gr A-Max and Varget powder. From what i have read I should have an overall length of 2.8 or 2.810 inches as it is the longest safe length the spear manual states. So I was wondering if I was on track with the OAL and how much powder for a good accurate load; Was thinking of 44-44.5gr based on manual and what I have read here. thx

Re: Working with my new Remington 5r

If you want to find the very maximum OAL for your rifle, use an empty case with no powder or primer and barely seat the bullet in the case using a press. Drop the round in as a single shot and slowly chamber the round until the bolt is fully closed. Now, this will take some effort but go slowly. Once the bolt is closed, eject the blank and mic the OAL. This should be your maximum chamber depth which is into the lands. Start backing off from there until you find out if a "jump" or "jam" works out better. Now, I'm sure some will disagree with this method, but it has worked for me and my father with every rifle we've ever handloaded for.

this is my exact same method. i color the dummy bullet with majic maker so when i bring in down .10 i can check and make sure there is no contact. if there is it will show.

my 5r likes 168 smk 42.5 varget br2s. my oal is 2.800 to feed in the magazine. my actual oal is 2.820. in my experience, if you make these 5rs run hot the groups open up. the more i worked up from 42.5 the worse they got.
