I've got a Leupold Vari X III with target knobs and considering Leupold retrofit with M1 knobs.

Looking for comments from those who have had this done regarding the value add.

TIA for your comments...

Re: Wortth converting from target knobs to M1 knobs?

I converted a low-pro knob for the M1 knob. I couldn't dial dope well with the low-pro knob at all. I really like the M1 style and it has served me well. At the same time I changed a duplex reticle out for the TMR reticle. It was a little pricey, but well worth the $$$ in my opinion. I only changed out the elevation knob because I usually hold wind. I can still dial wind with the low-pro knob, but I never do. With the TMR, I've got positive hold-overs for the wind (which is usually changing out here).

IIRC, the target knobs are only waterproof if the cap is on, where the M1 is waterproof, no cap required. I may be wrong about that, Leupold can tell you for sure. Don't know if that is important to you, but I would suspect that may be an issue in WA.

If you're cranking on the knob much, that cap will get set aside and possibly lost - something that I don't have to worry about any more. Way more important for moving/hunting that for spending time on a square range.

Hope this helps...I'm happy with mine.

Re: Wortth converting from target knobs to M1 knobs?

I own two leupold's with target turrets and two with the M1 turrets. I like the target turret caps especially for the windage turret. With the cap on I do not have to worry about my windage zero getting moved.

I like the M1 turrets for the elevation turret because each full minute of angle is labeled (i.e. 1,2,3,4) unlike the target knob which has every 3 minutes labeled(i.e. 0,3,6,9).

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I have a scope with target turrets and duplex reticle that I want to send back to Leupold and have a TMR put in it, and while I'm at I think I will have them install a M1 turret for elevation and leave my target turret w/ cap for my windage. It may not look all to pretty, but I prefer performance over prettiness.

I had one done a few years ago,it was well worth it.Have the Side Focus knob done at the same time, the M1 is larger and more user friendly.

As far as doing the EL knob only, post pics so we can see it.It should look pretty interesting.

Mine was Mildot already,I would not have wasted my money on a reticle change.JMHO The VXIII series actually has a better warranty than the MKIV las time I checked.

I'll try to get to a camera in the next day or two. I'm on a location without all my gear now. Pics up when I can post them. It does look a little funny, but it keeps the side profile a little cleaner, and cost less money.

YMMV

Chilo - thanks for the response. I will contact Leupold regarding the waterproof issue. As you stated, it is a concern in Washington state.

Katahdin - I too would prefer each MOA marked in-lieu of every third.

Sandrat - did not even consider the side focus knob. Good put.

Looks like it need to box it up and send it out. Thanks guys for the input!

Quick google search revealed this Optics Talk thread.

The answer from within that thread:

The Target style elevation turrets are both weatherproof and waterproof to 10 feet.

Thank you.

Also, if you have or might switch to a mil based reticle, you might want to wait until Leupold starts offering the M5 knobs as a retrofit option. Supposedly that'll start early 2011.

Re: Wortth converting from target knobs to M1 knobs?

Unless you just want to spend the $170+ bux, keep the target turrets. They are actually lower in profile compared to the M1 and they are as rugged.

I have M1, M2, and M3 turret scopes on MK IV scopes. I like the M2 best.
