Hunting & Fishing Would you shoot it?

There is a piebald deer on the property I hunt in Connecticut. I have seen it several times over the last year. (I almost hit it last summer crossing the road). I've seen it in the woods twice this year, but have not had a shot at it as I was bow hunting. Now that we are in the middle of rifle season......My question is: Would you shoot it? Why or why not? How about an albino? If you did kill it, would you mount it or have the skin tanned? I've asked some buddies, and have gotten a 50/50 response for various reasons, some more ridiculous than others. I'm leaning towards sending it to deer heaven if I get a shot, though I'm curious to see how everyone else feels about it.

In some states it's illegal to shoot albino game, not sure about piebald, but check your regs first.

I would blast it in a heartbeat, why even ask? Who cares what others think! Albino game is protected in WA State, I guess I'm a equal opportunity deer dropper.

If legal, I certainly would. I have one on the wall my dad shot in '76 with a bow. 98% white with black eyes and black nose. The albinos are supposed to be genetically weaker and should be culled from the herd. They typically have lesser eyesight. Their traits are passed along in some part to the pie balds giving more chance for a true albino to show up. As for mounting, I would, they don't come by every day.

Why would either of the two (albino or piebald) be more protected than any other deer? that seems ridiculous.

If you don't take it, I'm sure one of your neighbor hunters will, given the chance. But when/if you do, be prepared to take some good quality photos. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

I kick myself everytime i get in the stand for not taking an opportunity that I had on a piebald doe 2 yrs ago with my bow. Another buddy saw it last yr, so maybe one of us will get it eventually. It is illegal to shoot an albino deer (totally white w/ pink eyes according to the TN Wildlife Resources Agency deer guide book) but totally legal to shoot a piebald. For that matter, I guess any jacked up deer as long as it is not totally white and have pink eyes. I hunt more than anybody I know and have for the 15yrs, and out of the tens of 1000's of deer I have seen that was the only piebald sighting. If I were you, I would shoot it (if legal there). Good luck running into it again, sounds like it wont be a problem.

I would also make a ghost if it crossed my path.. Once in a lifetime opportunity. I've seen quite a few white turkeys but no white/different colored deer. Shot a few yotes w/out legs, tails, ears, upper jaw and never felt bad Post a pic if you get it,, would like to see.

Seneca White Deer. In this Central NY region, and dispersed more thinly across New England, white deer are known and seen occasionally, as well as piebald deer. As a general rule, local deer hunters give them quarter and allow them to breed.

We like seeing them, and besides, the whole area is so rotten with deer that there's way more than enough conventional deer to harvest.

My Son-in-Law's Mom hit a buck last night on the drive home from work. Deer are a fact-of-life driving hazard around here. Rt14 along the Western length of Seneca Lake average more than one deer strike per day throughout the year.

You could probably feed a village continuously on just the fresh road kill deer from that roadway alone. The State Police and DEC cooperate to collect the kill to feed captive wolf and cougar populations in the state.

Coyotes are very common, and rumor attributes occasional remote wolf and cougar sightings to clandestine releases by DEC, who are reputed to neither confirm nor deny. There are vast tracts of wilderness land in Northeast portion of the state, with just Adirondack Park alone being larger than several of the smaller New England states combined.

Keep your camera handy at all times. I got this picture on my way home from a hunt a couple of years ago. She was behind a little country store in a field on posted property.

I'd drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot! If it's a legal animal to take in your state, I sure would. Those are nice deer. If it's pretty unique, I'd probably mount it as well.

In Oklahoma you can not shoot any "white" deer without written permission from the director of the department of wildlife. Goofy if you ask me.
