So I have an M&P 40 - should I suppress it or drop in a 40 to 9 conversion barrel from storm lake. How quiet are the two in comparison.

Get a .45 Silencerco Osprey and use it for .45, .40 and 9mm. There is a video on Silencerco's website where they show the different suppressors on .45/.40/9mm.

If you are just trying to decide between the 9 and 40, go with the 9mm. Easier to find over the counter sub sonic rounds.

Ironically, i've been watching the whole subsonic pistol caliber availiablilty thing for a while.
Mind you, I travel, ALOT
I havent seen any sort of generic 147gr FMJ 9mm ammo anywhere. (i'm talking big time gunshops and ammo outlets)
I've never seen a marketed subsonic 40cal round either
(aside from bullshit self defense hydroshocks)(which i'm not paying $1.50 a shot just so it can be marginally quieter)

9mm will be quieter suppressed at supersonic. In ss, no .45 can is going to suppress the 9mm as well as a proper bore 9mm can, not even close.
Subsonic, either 9mm or 40 will suppress well...

I went through this thought process myself and decided on a .22 suppressor. I'm glad I did, I can put it on a lot of different guns and I shoot it a lot more since its so cheap. CCI subsonics through a can are badass quiet. If you already have one though, and will reload your own subsonics, physics dictate you shoot the biggest bullet you can if you're limited by velocity.
I went through this thought process myself and decided on a .22 suppressor. I'm glad I did, I can put it on a lot of different guns and I shoot it a lot more since its so cheap. Have to agree with you on the 147. I guess it has been so long since I've searched for it. (still have a stock pile) Its out there but not as readily available as before.

Cool thing about 40S&W and 45ACP is that all the cheap-assed ball ammo is subsonic. I.E. Walmart ball 180gr 40S&W is subsonic.
On 9mm, the cheap ammo is supersonic. You gotta pay extra to get the subsonic stuff.
Cheaper to shoot a 40S&W subsonic than a 9mm. But 9mm's are generally quieter than anything 40 or 45.
