Just finished this one: OUTSTANDING read... finished the book "one second after"

I have been a student of primitive, wilderness and self reliance skill all my life.
No other single literary work has ever encouraged me to keep those skills polished and aquire more skills...

I wrote this letter below in e-mail to my personal & private friends locally. I present it here for my SH friends as well.

====================================================

Friends,

I have been studying & learning primitive wilderness living skills, survival skills and skills of self reliance all my life. I just read the book "One Second After."

All secular literary works combined that I have read- this one single book has single handedly justified as well as vindicated the countless hours I have put into my primitive skill set as well as the $10,000+ I put into training. It has also like no other thing prompted me to get up out of my complacency, polish the skills I have and acquire more.

As a young man Primitive skills were cool, neat and full filling to me. Now as a middle aged man they are like an insurance policy in a trying economy and with the evening news solidifying the fact that we are living in uncertain times despite the local McDonald's still cranking out french fries today, just as they did yesterday and the day prior. This does not guarantee French Fires tomorrow.

One second after is a fictional story on an EMP attack on the United States. More accurately it is called "future history." It could easily happen any moment. As a story in and of itself it is a great read. A bonus for us East Tennesseans is that it is set in Black Mountain, NC which is just outside Asheville. It's neat to read a modern best selling novel that speaks of towns, roads, place names, even creek* names that we are familiar with.

(*for two years I was a professional back packer based out of the Old Fort/ Black Mountain area and am familiar with all the names in the book)

So lets say you prepare and an EMP attack never occurs. What are you out? Nothing? A little time? Minor expense? That's a cheap insurance policy that feels like a warm blanket- with the bonus being your ready for the next hurricane Katrina, New Orleans flood, nuclear reactor disaster or to help those experiencing same.

I used to teach primitive skills and am getting in a place to soon resume them. But wherever you seek skill an ounce of prevention goes a long way. This is an open letter my friends ask you to as I have shake off complacency and seek a little knowledge and take a few measures as some you and all our parents were taught to by the civil defense service a generation ago.

Here's the website for the book: http://www.onesecondafter.com/ I borrowed this copy I have from a friend and am ordering my own copy. I suggest you OWN your own copy rather than borrow it from a friend. This way you can pass it around as I shall mine. I'm uncertain as to where the best pricing for the book is on the net but a quick search should reveal it. Don't let this fall through the crack. Place your order now lest you go right on as if tomorrow is promised to be in the terms your used to and familiar with.

I was appreciative to be given the info I have passed on here to you. Feel free to pass this e-mail far & wide, and feel free to strip it of my web address lest anyone should dismiss this urging letter to personal friends as a sales pitch and use that as an excuse disregard the need awareness.

There is no guarantee there will be french fries tomorrow.
Yours truly,
Tres MonCeret

I want to read that book - absolutely.

I just wonder, based on the fact that we detonated at least 6 nukes in our upper atmosphere in operation Swordfish (Cool vids of it out there) - if an EMP strike such as that is likely to do any damage...I fear the 9.0 earthquake that will wipe Seattle off the map..

I've bought a copy of Cody Lundin's book and plan to read it soon...

Cody may be a hippy (Dual Survival star) but he's spot on - in that he practices with ZERO man made tools...

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

I've never been a "dooms-dayer" sort of fellow, but I always have had an interest in "basics' in camping and living. Even did it a while (spent two years living in a cabin in Alaska, no electricty, no running water), living on what I could hunt, or trade for.

I'm a little old for such foolishness now days but I still have the interest. I like going to BPCR matches where "re-enactors" show up with all their home made gear, not just "arms" but furniture, cooking implements, clothing shealter, the works.

If one is interested in this stuff, whether you are a "doomsdayer" or history buff, its well worth the effort to show up at one of these re-enactment camps"

My wife was hired to call a square dance at a Ft. Phil Kerney re-enactment. We spent the weekend with these guys, you can learn a lot and they are great people.

Thse guys are blacksmiths by hobby, they make their own tools and other implements. Interesting to watch them work. To see them make nails makes you really respect the problems our forefathers went through.

I even do it to a point, when camping with my grandkids I they have to make all their eating implements, spoons, forks, etc. They have to start fires, wet or dry without any paper for fuels other then wood, They enjoy the heck out of it. Even make them tie their own flys, build a fire, and cook their own catch, while fishing.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

I'm not much of a reader but......I read this book until my eye balls hurt. Picked it up the next day and did the same.

Truley one of the most interesting books I have read.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

I read this book last year, it caused quite a stir in Congress of all places. They wanted to know how possible this actually is. The bottom line, it's very possible, but there wasn't much Congress could do at this point.

I'm not a doomsday sayer either, but do believe in being prepared for realistic hazards. Growing up in hurricane country, we've experienced nearly 20 storms of various sizes since childhood, it's the major threat here. But it's easy to get tunnelvision and not think about other likely emergencies that might require different preparations.

The heightened earthquake activity, and worldwide political unrest, attest to changing times. I have to remember to re-evaluate my personal risks, as well as the hazards of the area. How many Japanese nuke engineers thought preparing for a 30' tsunami was un-necessary?

Another realistic read along these lines is "Lights Out" by David Crawford. It's a story of how a group of friends pulled through against the odds in an area just outside San Antonio. These books help to see scenarios we don't normally think about.

I can be a poor communicator and if this was the case I'm sorry. I wish to spread merely awareness and a little common sense prevention. Not doom, gloom hopelessness or a doomsday genre.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

I read this book last year. It is a real eye opener. If it doesn't make you think, nothing will.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the msm reported that Venezuela bought rockets that would be able to send this exact type payload to the southern U.S.. I do not think they have launch facilities available at this time, but if they bought this type of payload and means of transport, the facilities can not be very for behind.

If nothing else the recent news reports from Japan with empty food shelves and no water should make people put something aside.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

The thing about most of these types of books is you can substitute the disaster of your choice into the story line and come up with feasible preparedness information for your own AO. One Second After takes place about 2 hours west of me in Black Mountain.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

Light Out was also excellent. I have loaned it to a few of my friends and they all enjoyed it. A couple have said that it motivated their wives or so's to step up the prepping. The only negative comment I heard about lights out was that they spent too much time on their feild ops preperations and the actual battle scenes.

That comment came from a guys wife, so I just considered the source and took it with a grain of salt.

Just a heads up on a book called American Apocalypse by Nova. DON'T waste your money. If anybody does decide they have to read it, IM me your address and I will send it to you, if you will send it along to somebody else.

Re: Wow what a book!! "One Second After"

I've read Patriots, One Second After and just finished Lights Out. I liked them all but I think One Second After was the best. Lights Out may be a little more realistic in the pace at which things fall apart. All are high on my recommended reading.
