Hello all, I've got a few questions. To start with Im shooting a stock Springfield XD .45 Tac. no add ons nothing just bare bones. I purchased the weapon a few years ago when they came out and have fired quite a few rounds thru it, I am just a recreational shooter. I know its not really top shelf and its duty is more of a service weapon but my accuracy seems to be in question. All my shots are a little less than 12" groups with 7 rounds at 15yrds. However Im not in the black Im to the left of it, and some what high. Is there a "Bubba" way of adjusting my sites or am I just doomed as a pistol shooter? I shoot my buddies Kimber all in the black, but thats what I would hope for for a 1200$ gun lol. Any suggestions? Also I just started reloading so any good reloads would be helpful too. Thanks

Re: XD .45 Tac. Accuracy Questions

Let's see your target.

Don't take this wrong, but I suspect the group size is software related, not hardware. I've only seen one gun shoot that badly and it was a Colt Commander with the worst fit factory barrel I've ever seen. It wobbled in the bushing almost 3/16" of an inch from one side to the other.

If you show us the target, we may be able to discern what you're doing wrong.

Re: XD .45 Tac. Accuracy Questions

My out-of-the-box XD45 Tactical would hold 3-4" groups at 25yds. Once Rich at Canyon Creek Custom got done with it, it will shoot better than I can and with his trigger job, the reset is short/lightning fast which makes the gun fast AND accurate.

Unless you just ended up with a serious factory lemon, I would guarantee you that it is operator error causing groups that large.

Re: XD .45 Tac. Accuracy Questions

Yeah I've never had formal training on pistols, let alone rifles really for that matter, but I've shot rifles from a young age. I was just wondering what the accuracy of others was like, heres one of my targets. The marker groupings were done today and shot yesterday so they may be a little off but you can get the just of where they were aimed.

Green - top orange dot
Red - bottom orange dot
Blue - Center
Orange - was POA of black hits

My wife and a good buddy of mine get better shots out of the pistol as well so I know its gotta be something with me.

Re: XD .45 Tac. Accuracy Questions

I have the same gun and it shoots (or I shoot) left also, even off a bag. It is a couple of inches at 15 yds, but when I move back to 25 I have to aim at the right side of the 8in wide steel. I just figured I would wait to mess with it when I install night sites. I have read somewhere that others were having this problem also.

Also have a XDM 40, it is dead on!

Re: XD .45 Tac. Accuracy Questions

Before you go adjusting anything, moving sights, etc., let some other people shoot it and see what kind of results that are able to obtain (i.e. - if your buddy with the Kimber is a good pistol shooter, let him shoot a couple of mags through it and see what his results are). The reason that I say that is that this problem could be any number of issues and it may not be the gun itself causing your accuracy/POI woes. Proper grip, trigger manipulation, follow through, sight picture/alignment, etc. are all possible sources of your problem. Many of these problems are only heightened because it doesn't sound like you have had any formal training or proper instruction into pistol shooting basics even though you have been shooting at least this pistol for a while now. Don't underestimate how even small errors in technique can create huge problems on target.

One thing many shooters with these pistols don't realize is that your sights may be setup to use a different sight picture than what you would "think" is correct. The sights on MANY of the factory SA XD pistols I have shot are 6-o'clock shooters, meaning that instead of the more tradition #2 image, you should actually shoot with your sight picture as #1 below. Based on your "orange" circle you drew for POA for the group you fired into the black, it is likely you have a 6 o'clock shooter/sight picture pistol. Even with that done, you would still be shooting left which could be a sight picture issue, trigger manipulation problem, or it could be that your sights are a little right causing your POI to be left.

** Thanks to NavyGuy on the SIGforum for the graphic **

After you get the pistol into other shooter's hands and see what kind of results they are able to obtain, you will hopefully have a better idea if its the gun or you. In the meantime, get some training (or at a minimum, do some reading/vid watching) on proper pistol shooting technique including grip, trigger manipulation, stance, sight picture/alignment, etc., etc.
