probably a dumb post question. i have an ares 4-27 btr and an xrt 2 5-25. with the (hope gone soon) cataract issues,i am not just not able to assign a ranking of these 2 as re optical quality. anyone have a like direct eval impression? yes,i know all eyes are diff and mine suck. just looking for impressions that others may have. thanks.

With my glasses my scopes aren’t great for others shooting through them. Everything is personal so unless you have time to get one set up to you it’s hard to make any definitive statements.

That said I would expect the ares to have better glass but the xtr to be more hardy. No one really complains about the glass quality with the ares btr. No one complains about the robustness with the xtr.

I think the reason the Ares BTR's went on sale the last few months is the model was upgraded, that's an assumption of mine, might be true, might not be, but it seems to be a trend.

I know my older Ares BTR 4.5-27 could have better glass, it's okay, better than some other scopes I have in the approx price range like the SWFA 3-15, but my Midas TAC's have more pleasing glass than both??!!

Sometimes these scope Co's make improvements but don't make a public statement about it. Could be the same with the Burris. I like both the Ares and the Burris, definitely prefer the reticle in the Ares, and definitely the feel of the Burris with a nod going to the Burris overall. I have no reason to doubt the Ares, all of them have functioned fine but Burris has a great track record. Though to be honest I met a guy at our local LR spot that sent his Burris 5-25 back twice and was very disappointed in it because it wasn't fixed to his satisfaction.

I know if the TAC's had the same .2 reticle as the Ares, I'd be selling a bunch of scopes and just settle on the TAC's. It's just a top scope in it's price range considering what it offers.

I’d agree with this. I love my XTR ii but it’s not because of glass quality, it’s because it tracks well and is a tank

I think the Burris xtr ii had the best feeling turrets than any other scope I've tried and it is built like a tank but ultimately I sold mine. I only used it once in a match where a stage had the sun directly in our faces. My scope completely washed out and I could barely see anything. None of the other shooters in my stage had the same issue. I got a goose egg on the stage, but after waiting a half hour for the sun to move, I cleaned it. Unfortunately it didn't count the second time. That was enough for me. I upgraded to better glass, a better reticle, and a scope with a sunshade.

I haven’t had that happen but I could see how it’d force your hand. I just a got Kahles 5-25i and now I feel spoiled. I think the slightly used XTR iis going for $800 or so is a good deal though.
