I tried to explain this to a “friend” who was in the same position as i had been years ago, but found nothing but offense with what i had said. However, he had purposely put himself in the position vs i had fallen on hard times with a crappy economy. He quit his decent paying job as he was “tired of making millions for da man” to then strike out on his own and have zero motivation to actually work unless his back was against the wall for rent. Soon as he would have breathing room he would stop working all together. Buying beer and cigarettes when he could barely afford food.You can’t take respect.

I didn’t need charity cases like this in my life and we parted ways. He still owed me around 7k which ill never see. Pos actually “borrowed some of my tools and my other work truck to “work” and sold them and gave me nothing.
He though he deserved respect when he had earned nothing, but people are entitled these days.
You hear the word "respect" a lot in corporate america. "you must respect others.."
In my mind, there is a difference between actively "respecting" someone vs actively "disrespecting" someone. I think I was raised as a good person (kind of), and I was thought never to actively disrespect someone I dont know. But it doesn't mean I'll automatically grant them respect, specifically as a person or to any of their ideas.
That respect is earned.

I think it's a little more complicated. I can respect an office/position without respecting the person at all. For instance, I fucking hate William J. Clinton with all my being and have since he smarmed his way into the Oval office, yet I saluted and showed him respect when I wore uniform...

Good example. There are positions, both informal/formal, that carry a long legacy that warrant more respect than others based on what they represent, not necessarily by who occupies those roles.
