I wondered if others had experience with this finish on a rifle. I need a couple rifles finished and wondered how Bear Coat compares with duracoat and ceracoat and/or others. I have this finish on a pistol but it doesn't get the field use a rifle receives.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Your thoughts on "Bear Coat" Finish

If you are looking for a home-applied finish, look at the Brownells aerosol coatings. I like the Teflon Moly finish and have it on several rifles and handguns.

It is best to blast the action with aluminum oxide to give the finish a rough surface to bond to, but since I don't have a blast cabinet at this time, I use 100 grit sandpaper. The finish is solid for a working gun and sheds water like a duck's back.

Be sure to THOROUGHLY degrease the surfaces before application and if you are coating an action, leave it in the oven for a couple of hours. The heavy parts(barrel/action) need more cure time.

I had bear-coat on my Les baer 1911. I would rate the finish similar to many factory painted-on finishes in terms af durability. A little soft for my liking. Were I to apply a coating at this point, I would have a hard time doing anything other than Cerakote.

Re: Your thoughts on "Bear Coat" Finish

I am interested in this now. Is there anything better about this bear coating that makes it better than the regular finishes etc?

Good post btw!

Thanks,
