My oldest boy will be turning 10 soon and wants his own target/ hunting rifle. I'd like to find something in 6.5 creedmoor since I already have everything to reload for it. He can shoot my rifles okay off a bench but the LOP is way to long for freehand shots and my rifle is a little on the heavy side for him at 13lbs. Looking to spend $700-$800 max on the rifle because once he grows out of it I won't have any use for it.

McMillan A5 with adjustable length of pull. Take all the spacers out. That's what fits my 10 year old. You can build whatever you want and it can grow with him.

My 9yo daughter is getting a Tikka T3x 223, in a Boyd's AT1 stock, it's slightly long for her now, but I bet it will be gtg after her next growth spurt. That stock will grow with her, it's not too heavy, the size of the stock is reasonable for her to handle. And only $200. The action is really dang smooth. I am thinking about getting a Sterk swept ball handle for it to make bolt manipulations a bit easier. Hopefully I'll go zero it this week.

Find a Ruger American Predator in the 6.5, they shoot pretty good, threaded barrel already might need a trigger job, through it in a MDT Chassis, nice and light good to go

i agree with Steve123, ive done the same.
wood stock chop it up, stick a nice soft pad on it and the kids love it.
my brother did the same but we took the part we removed and sliced it up and made spacers.
when they got bigger we just added the spacers.

I did this same thing a couple years back, and a huge thanks to those here who helped me. I took a saw to an old Remington wood stock, and threw together a 700 with a slightly used AAC 260 barrel, and cut it off at 16 inches. I mounted up a small 1-6 scope on it, and so far junior is 2 for 2 on mule deer, and 1 for 1 on elk with the rifle. In another couple weeks we intend on making it 2 for 2 on elk :)
(The gun shoots 120 gr PVRI BTHP match bullets at about 2800 about .5-.8 MOA)

xlr but stocks can come with a short tube extension that should be able to go to 11" LOP. Normally they go to 12" but the short one is for the side folder.

It might have some interference with the bolt and cheek piece. But if it works, it would be a one and done solution.

I will be in this position in a few years so this has been on my mind. I have been thinking about using a chassis and a 6 position ar stock. It will grow with him and it will be more comfortable to me if i shoot it.

I did this with and it was OK. I put in a chassis, I can't remember the name now, but it took a AR stock. The cheekweld was tough and never felt as solid as a stock. I think I'd probably go with a spacer system next time.

If they're already passed .22 lr I would go .223, they're just great guns to have in pretty much any scenario. I feel like REALLY learning the fundamentals on a good .22lr really helps build the skills that transfer over to shooting larger calibers. Lots of good stuff out there, Tikka, Howa, Savage, Boyds stocks, Mcmillian, Bell and Carlson take your pick.
