I am looking for NV to shoot pigs with. I have zero experience with amy type of NV. Is this something to use with my dayscope (NSX and S&B) or do I need to go another direction like thermal? All help is very welcome.

Re: Zeiss Hensoldt night vision NVS-80

I use a clip on NVD that mounts to the rail in front of my day scopes. The low end option is the ATN PS22-2 that you can get for about $1800. There have been reports of this NVD having recoil issues wherein one of the internal structures moves causing a loss of zero. I have a couple of friends who use this NVD and neither of them have reported any problems. From there, you are looking into serious cash, as the next level up, the BNS (Boresighted Night Sight) which I use, goes for $7400. To be fair, the BNS is a Gen 3 Pinnacle Autogated sight. To get the same tube in the ATN would cost would cost $4800 for an inferior product. I have never seen the Zeiss NSV-80 prior to your mentioning it here, but for nearly $12K, I would look into the BNS. You could get a mil-spec AN/PVS-22 for that price!

Re: Zeiss Hensoldt night vision NVS-80

The NSV-80 is a mil-spec unit. It is the standard issue CNVD for the German army and others. The Germans use it on everything from their AIAW 300WM G22, to the DSR-1, to their version of the Barrett M107.

A PVS-22 won’t hold a candle to the NSV-80, but, with it's smaller lens, it wasn't designed to. The PVS-27 is a more direct comparison and it comes close, but there are some definite advantages given to the NSV in terms of weight and resolution in less than perfect light.

I hope that helps.
