Re: Zeiss Rapid Z 800/1000 reticle
I have a 4.5-14-50 and a 6.5-20x50 Conquest with the Rapid Z 800 and Varmint respectively. I would not trade either of them. I really like these scopes and have a hunting buddy that was gone over to them as well. The glass is very good in both, actually probably as good as my NXS. The reticle in the 6.5-20 is finer than the one in the 4.5-14, but neither are as thin as my NP-R1 in the NXS. With that said, I don't feel like either reticle is going to obstruct the game that I am looking at through them enough to deter me from attempting the shoot at a reasonable distance. In case you have not worked with the reticle yet, you are going to need to find a chronograph to really get it to work for you. Find the load that you want and that your gun likes, chronograph the load to see what kind of velocity that you are getting out of it and then check the Rapid Z calculator on the Zeiss website. One thing that you will want to watch for it that the power setting on the scope that you use for the first shot will change for the second and all follow up shots. For example, with the load that I am using, my best power for the first shot was 11.54. All follow ups were at 11.95. Doesn't seem like much, but at distance that is more than enough movement in the reticle to cause you to miss the shot. All in all, it will be hard to wrong with one of these for hunting applictions in my opinion.
