Zeroing Rifle

Re: Zeroing Rifle

Everytime I see a post like this it reminds me of a guy I hunt with. He doesn't know how to zero a scope, but he also doesn't like anyone touching his rifle. So he shoots it to see where it is hitting the paper then just holds off. Never needed to zero a rifle before in his life. Gotta love it.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

I have been hunting for over 20 yrs with a bow, this is my first rifle(Remington 5r w/ manners stock, nightforce scope) and was really wondering what most shooters use. I am open to using either, I hunt on 1500 hundred acres(south Texas)

If I want to print tiny groups out to 300 yards I use my 168 SMk's over Varget, if I am smacking iron out to 1,000 yards I use 175 SMK over Varget.
So I guess it really depends on what your intended use is. There is a shit pot of info on this website, so hang out here and you will find the answer to your question.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

I like the guys that come to the range to "zero"there rifle. Every year I make a point to go to Knob Creek (where big machine gun shoot is) right before Deer season opens....They will set a 4X4 1/2 sheet of plywood at 25yds and start screwing massive changes in windage and elevation shooting 30-40 rounds then move back to 100yds..its a all day grin. I heard one guy tell his buddy just zero it at 25 and "hold bout a foot over his back out to 200 and you'll be right on"

Re: Zeroing Rifle

When you say "168" or "175" I believe most of us assume you are referring to Sierra Match King bullets. If that is correct and you are wanting to hunt with your rifle (as you mentioned in your second post), there are better bullet choices than the SMK/OTM bullet. I don't know your prey, but a Barnes TSX or TTSX are good choices for many types of game. There are other all copper/guilding bullets from Hornady and Nosler. If your prey is not too tough (deer vs. hogs), almost any soft point would be sufficient.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

Wasn't impressed with Barnes triple shocks myself. I pulled peices of copper out of a deers horns from a bullet that came apart in flight out of a 300 ultra. Guy claimed be loaded it to book specs.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

I remember when I was a lad 50 years ago. Just before deer season (in PA) we would dig out our deer rifles, wipe off the dust, and go down by the creek where we had room for a 100 yard shot.
Then we would shoot one shot, adjust sights (first iron, later scope), repeat until a bullet hit within one inch of bullseye.
Ah, ignorance was bliss.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

Don't know how to zero a rifle? Really? Jesus mary and motherF*&ker, how does someone not figure out what those knobs are for...

Not knowing how to read wind, sure it's a bit of an art. But zeroing?

hunting bullets, nosler makes a good bullet in the ballistic tip also pretty damn consistent lot to lot for BC (the melat doesn't get jacked up or formed differently)

For high bc hunting rounds the Hornady 178 should be ok depending on what your hitting with it.

Guy's gotta start somewhere. Cut him some slack. Did YOU come out of the womb all-seeing, all-knowing?

In regards to the question, like others have said, zero with what you plan to shoot. Some have mentioned the need to use 175's if you plan to shoot to 1000, but failed to mntion why. The 168's go sub-sonic around 900 and are not consistent at 1000.

Re: Zeroing Rifle

With my .308 5R the 11.2" twist seems to prefer 175s to the 168s, especially the Black Hills Match variety. Range doesn't matter... this is what it likes.
