Maggie’s Planning a Road Trip to Alaska - Need Intel

I'm getting itchy feet, so it's time to start planning a road trip. I want to see Alaska. It will be nearly 7000 miles roundtrip by the time I factor in excursions. I'm aiming for September. With any luck, this tariff situation will have settled down by then and all they'll hate me for is being Califorian. I'm used to that. There will be several challenges I can foresee.
  • My Akita, Shiloh will be coming with me. That means getting health certificates...etc.
  • My Driver's license is up for renewal in September, so I need to get that done as early as possible because I'll need the new license with me.
  • Carrying handguns across Canada ain't happening. Long guns might be possible, but it depends on a lot of "Things" I can't control. Best plan of action may be to just buy a Guide Gun or something similar at the first Alaskan town I reach. (Tok) It'll make a better souvenir than a t-shirt or coffee mug, am I right? On my return trip through Tok, I've already found a business that specializes in shipping guns back down to greater 48. In the meantime, I've already picked up a couple of big cans of bear spray.
  • I think my F-250 will be my best vehicle for the trip. I've already spoke with a localized and tamed Snow Mexican who's made this trip before, and she assures me that diesel will be easy to find going thru Canada. Looking on the map, average distance between communities stays below 300 miles. That's well within the range of my fuel tank. I'll carry extra tanks just in case. I also don't plan to go pass any community without tanking up first.
  • Being in Alaska on, or close to the Equinox will mean cold nights and maybe cold days. I can prepare for that. It will also mean less mosquitoes and a better chance of seeing Northern Lights.
Is there something else I should be planning for, doing or not doing? I've never been to Alaska before, and I'll be in some remote country with just my dog for backup.

I don't plan on hunting or fishing on this trip. But whatever I learn on this trip may well lead to a focused hunting/fishing trip in the future.

Any tips, cautions or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

SOLD FS: Attn2Detail mk1 small knife

Zelle, PayPal friends and family no notes

$old

Attn2Detail Mark-1 small. Magnacut blade. Titanium handles.

Carried 3 times. Factory edge, cut some tags off clothes and that's been it. I'm the orginal owner.

I took a pic of it, on the handle edge, by the blade there is some small indentations, just part of the manufacturing process I guess. It came from knifejoy like that. The overall length is listed as 6.25" so it's smaller.

Hey guys,

Reposting this in comp thread as I hope it gets better traction!

Looking to get some feedback from the group running RMR/SRO/Aimpoint/etc on top of 20+ zoom scopes for target acquisition out to 900 yards. Is a more definitive small dot like a 1 moa RMR the way to go? Should an easier to pick up 6.5 MOA RMR be better? something in the middle?

Pictures with feedback is always appreciated. I would be running a Vortex Razor G2 4.5-27 and a Vortex impact 4000. Using a baldknobber diving board mount for the RMR/SRO for reference so i will be using an RMR. see below link and picture.

Which suppressor to use on my rifle? (Griffin 30SD-K or SiCo Specwar 762)

These are my two rifle suppressors I have at the time and curious which you'd recommend running on a PRS style rifle in 6GT. The Specwar is 9" and 24oz, but it threads on to a muzzle device and locks up fairly well. The Griffin 30SD-K is both shorter and lighter (17.5oz and 6.7") but uses GateLok so it has some slight movement to it. I'm not sure if that could induce any inaccuracy in the gun and if just going with a more secure lockup would be better than saving weight/length in an already long and heavy rifle.

Barrel wear or a manufacturing problem?

After turning 40, I decided that instead of a Corvette, I would build my dream bolt gun. No holds bar, I wanted the best money could buy but alas, I have had nothing but troubles with accuracy.

300PRC

x-caliber carbon bull barrel- 1:8 twist 5R 26" with the cryo treatment. This was a blank that I had a local (reputable) gunsmith fit and chamber for me.
Shooting Hornady 225 ELDM and its a 3-5 moa gun. I reload and made a hand load but it only gets slightly better.

I understand a sub moa gun in a 2 moa shooters hands will not get sub moa results.

I also understand that its a game of variables and that if something in the system is wrong (ie contact with the barrel to chassis) it will not have good results.

I have completely exhausted everything I can think of from shooting technique (if I didn;t have another gun- 6.5 prc that shoots amazing- I would doubt my ability to shoot) to ammo to the rest of the gun. I have a barrel cooler (motorized fan) that I let cool the barrel down.

I finally got a bore scope and was pretty amazed at how poorly my throat looked. Does this look like normal throat wear? Or is this a possible manufacturing issue? Or a gunsmithing issue? There is about 450 rounds down the barrel and like I said, I didnt abuse it with excessive heat or hot loads. The gun has never shot well. Below is a image of the throat of the 300 prc. I will also include an image of the throat of my proof 6.5 prc barrel with 120 rounds down it for comparison. Thanks for the help.

Bullet stabilization issues? .300 Norma Mag

Hi,

After solving my "super weird issues" which were due to bad primers, I have a new problem with my .300 Norma Mag reloads... my groups are very bad (between 1.7 and 2.7 MOA at 109 yards/100m) and it seems that literally all bullets land sideways on the paper target:
487500748_9528591027220202_6024409072926055085_n.jpg

Here's my reloading recipe:
  • Neck-turned Lapua Brass, trim to length 2.482in, neck OD 0.3355in for a loaded round at OD 0.3375in
  • Hornady A-Tip 250 grs, tried bullet jumps from 0.020in to 0.065in
  • RWS LRM primers
  • Vihtavuori N570 powder (77.9 grains) -- it seems low compared to some guys here on the forum but I'm already above Vihtavuori official max which is at 76.1 grains

I shot twice 15 bullets (plus like 3-5 fouler shots at the beginning):
  • String one (15 shots):
    • Average: 2703 fps
    • Std dev: 9.8 fps
    • Extreme Spread: 34.8 fps
  • String two (15 shots):
    • Average: 2703 fps (same as string one)
    • Std dev: 8.2 fps
    • Extreme Spread: 30.2 fps
I'm shooting with a silencer, but concentricity looks good:
487842999_996522142450608_1349494398747456024_n.jpg

And my barrel is a 26" 1:10 twist.

While my velocities aren't the best, they aren't terrible either, they're pretty stable... I really don't understand what's causing this.

I tried factory 230 grainers from Norma ("match grade" ammo) and it gave better groups (all holes touching at 109 yards), although I couldn't go to the target to check how they landed.

In your experience, what could cause this?
