Review: ZCO 840 versus March 5-42x PRS Edition

So to start I have no affiliation with March or ZCO and paid for both my ZCO 840s and my two March 5-42x PRS Editions.

I hope this review can help anyone on the fence wondering about getting a March that's shopping it against the ZCO. I debated on not calling out the ZCO 840 to avoid it seeming like a ZCO bash post but felt it's important to share the experience I've had putting 8k+ rounds downrange using a ZCO 840 for PRS in a little over a year fairly hard use.

I switched because one of my ZCO had a mechanical issue that seems to be common with some 840s and this coincided with me getting a March cert off a prize table. I bought the March hoping it could be a replacement for the ZCOs I was losing faith in and if nothing else I hoped it would be mechanically sound with similar optical quality.

Since placing the March order I've shot 4 regional matches, 3 pro matches, and several practice days that have seen me shooting the March in a variety of lighting and weather conditions. So far the March has exceeded all my expectations and has proven to be a higher performing optic across all the conditions it has been used in.

Optics:
Both optics have really good glass but the March is a step above in clarity at least to my eyes. Couple key notes that need a mention:
  • ZCO 840 are highly prone to sun glare as the sun is rising or setting to where even the sun shade wasn't enough at times. I've shot stages facing into the sun as it was rising with the March without the need to run the sun shade without issue. The features they added to address glare are something unique as none of my other optics handle sun glare as well.
  • The ZCO does well on mirage but the March cuts the target mirage better while allowing you "see" the mirage direction with angle. The mirage depth of field performance feels like high end binoculars with the March.
  • The wider FOV of the March comes at the cost of it having a smaller eye box. It was a minor adjustment and I had to pay attention to eye relief more to mount the scope properly. It's not as tight as the Kahles 40x which I found to feel too tight but it is tighter than the ZCO 840.
Turrets
The turret comparison isn't close. The March turrets are better than ZCO and are writable without messing with the tape wrap addons. I can dial quicker with more accuracy on the March versus the ZCO.

Parallax
When the ZCO parallax works its equally forgiving as the March if you have the diopter set properly. I find the adjustments a little less sensitive on the March at centerfire distances and if you are outside the "zero" parallax range with the March for a given setting the reticle moves less just outside the perfect parallax distance range. The knob is also easier get ahold of and turn on the March so adjustments are quicker on the fly (matters for rimfire PRS).

Reticle
The reticle on the March is faster to my eye for finding the correct hold overs than the Impact 1X. On the ZCO I found myself taking that split second to line count to make sure the hold was right for a 1.4 or .6 hold. The March has been faster and more intuitive. I do miss having more than a mil for a hold under on the March reticle but that has not been a issue so far. I haven't shot a tree reticle in centerfire since early 2024 and have not missed it once in over 12 pro matches.

Size:
The ZCO 840 is very large, especially with a sun shade. The March is a similar size to a 25x despite having 42x and is around 10 oz lighter despite the thicker tube.

TLDR:
The March is better and has become my primary optic of choice for competition shooting. I've already sold one of the ZCO and will likely sell the other one once it's done getting fixed.

Tikka T3X Super Varmint Build

Hey gents,

For years, I've been able to find the info I need from existing threads, but I've finally made a problem that I havent found someone else try. I am considering purchasing a .308 Win T3x Super Varmint. I have plans to turn it into the following abomination:
1. replace the regular green stock with a woox stock (was initially liking superleggera, but since I'm already getting a beast of a barrel, might go with a cobra).
2. Replace the bottom metal to the CTR to accept the 10 round mags.

I am still gathering data to confirm if the heavy barrel will interfere with the woox stock, but assuming it doesn't, would this in theory work? I am seeing stuff about certain chassis replacing the bottom metal, so if I got the CTR woox stock, would I still need the bottom metal? Am I just opening a can of worms that isn't worth the trouble? Lol.

Thanks for any advice you can share!

Stock/chassis Design and Recoil

I’m looking to hear yalls opinions on stock design and its effect on mitigating recoil. Right now I’ve got a 7PRC which I’ll admit I got a little overzealous on cutting weight and now I’m dealing with the consequences of my choices.

Rifle comes out just under 10lbs, with a suppressor and bipod. About 8.5lbs scoped weight without the can and accessories. I’m not scared of recoil but it’s pretty unpleasant to shoot anywhere besides off a bench and sandbags. It’s in a XLR element magnesium chassis, and it’s my first rifle that’s using essentially an AR buffer tube to connect the stock. I love the chassis but I’m wondering if that design is causing the significantly stiffer recoil impulse over my 28nosler pushing way heavier bullets in just over a 9lb package with a more traditional stock design.

I guess my question would be should I just start adding weight where I can to calm it down, or would I be better off going to a standard stock and using this chassis on something that isn’t as spicy? Would a different design geometry calm down the recoil significantly or is weight the only fix here?

I do love this chassis, I’m just not sure I’ve currently got on the best rifle for it to shine.

Firearms Bergara B14 Wilderness HMR 308 With Scope and Bipod

Rifle:
It is the.308 Win model of the B-14 Wilderness HMR bolt-action rifle with a capacity of 5 rounds in the magazine and +1 in the chamber. This model is coated in Sniper Grey Cerakote and is right-handed. The barrel has a length of 20 inches, and an overall length of 40 inches. The adjustable cheek rest is currently set for my use but is easily adjusted. There are some other rests that can be used to swap out the original, as well as pads that can be secured to the original cheek rest for more comfort. The weight of the rifle is 9.5 lbs. The full model number is B14S371. If you aren't used to the weight, you might consider this rifle to be heavy or clunky. I'd recommend using a rear squeeze bag.

Scope:
Comes with the scope already mounted. The scope is a Burris Fullfield IV 6-24x50mm, 30mm tube. The scope adjusts in 1-4 MOA, reticles are Ballistic E3 (model number 200495, non-illuminated model), has a total length of 15.6 inches, and weighs 24.8 ounces (per manufacturer). The scope is mounted using Weaver rings, 6-hole tactical to help keep the scope secure, are 30mm, medium matte (0.370 inches, 5.6 ounces), using a Bergara 20 MOA picatinny rail (Bergara/Rem 700 LA Black).

Bipod:
FAB Defense SPIKE Tactical Precision Bipod, black, picatinny attachment, has a height range of 180-290mm, rotates, and weighs 0.405 kgs. To the best of my knowledge, FAB did not create interchangeable feet for the bipod. The bipod is connected to the rifle using an Area 419 Improved Bipod Picatinny Rail. It has 10 slots, with an opening in the center of the rail to allow for the placement of various screw-hole distances (1.5-3.475 inches). The rail has a total weight of 0.2 lbs. and is composed of aluminum.

As stated, the rifle weighs 9.5 lbs. With the scope, bipod, and mounting accessories, the rifle weighs slightly more than 13 lbs. without ammunition.

The rifle bag is a 41-inch x 12-inch Savior Equipment American Classic, double rifle case. The divider is attached by Velcro down the seam. To accommodate the bolt and scope, I removed the divider. To protect the firearm, I laid a towel over the rifle before securing it with the two internal Velcro straps.

I bought the rifle brand new from Cabela's in June (I have all of the paperwork, if you would like more information). After ordering, I consulted with our gunsmith for him to procure the Burris scope and mounting accessories. After the rifle was available for pickup (June 19th), I was able to immediately take it to our gunsmith to have the scope mounted and have it zeroed at 100 yards. After zeroing, he ran several rounds through it (I don't remember if it was seven or eight). I still have the receipt for the work our gunsmith did, which includes the scope and accessories that he ordered for us. Less than a dozen rounds have been run through the Bergara, and he cleaned it before we picked it up.

I have been using my brother's bore cleaning rod guide, so I don't have one to include, but you can pick up a high quality one for less than $50 online (before tax and shipping).

If you want to see any other receipts, or links to any of the before-mentioned products, just let me know.

I am downsizing my collection some and I wasn't able to part with my other firearms, I haven't had time to use the Bergara, I recently moved and live in the city, the closest distance range is quite a ways away and would like to make an effort in exploring other interests with my fiancé.

Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of shot groupings. Everything is in superb condition.

I am asking for $1,650. That will include the rifle, scope, scope mounting accessories, bipod, bipod mounting accessories, the rifle bag (if you want the divider that separates the two-rifle partition, I will send that as well), the shipping, an FFL transfer, one box of 20 rounds of Hornady Black .308 WIN ammo (168 grain A-MAX, 2,700fps, #80971), and one box of 20 rounds of Federal Premium Gold Medal ammo (168 grain Sierra MatchKing, 2,650fps, #GM308M). I am located in Ohio, so if you are nearby, we could eliminate a step or two. I can remove the bipod for shipment, as well as remove and wrap the scope, if you prefer.

The one (gun) that got away

You ever pass on a gun, maybe because you were trying to be financially responsible, or to preserve peace at home, or because you thought a better one would come along, and then regret it?

I did. I'm left handed and wanted a Terminus Zeus SA. I go on gunbroker and lo and behold there is one, with several barrels and brass for cartridges I don't shoot. The price for all the stuff was quite reasonable, but I had already spent a lot on guns and didn't feel right burning that much. I reach out to the seller to see if he would sell me just the action. He says he wanted to sell as a package but if he didn't have any luck he would let me know. Check back a week later and he said the package was SPF. Good for him. Good for the buyer. Less good for me, and I have nobody to blame but myself.

So, what is the gun that got away from you. Either that you should have bought but didn't or sold and now regret?

4DOF inclined fire error

I get wildly different results for inclined fire with 4DOF vs Applied Ballistics Quantum & other calcs.

The 4DOF app provides a solution with much greater difference between flat and angled fire than all other calculators.

Using inputs of
MV 2747
Bullet: Hornady .22 80gr ELDM (using drag model in 4DOF, and g7 bc of .244 in other apps)
1:8 twist
Sight height 42mm
Zero range 100M
target range 600m
Standard atmosphere at 0m ASL
wind 1m/s from 270 deg
target at 600m, flat or -20 deg angle.
elevation correction in mils
azimuth 114 latitude -043

See this table for the results from 4 different solvers:
angles.jpg

Any clever ideas? Has anyone else found this with 4DOF? Real-world results for flat shooting are great for me with 4DOF. However, I've been using AB because the real-world results for angled shots seem to match up better.

Delta Jets Collide at LaGuardia... and barely a peep?

It's like they are trying to make this story go away!

Two regional jets (not small ones, either!) collided on a taxiway. One injured, no deaths. Extensive damage to planes.

They are 'analyzing' the voice boxes.

Let me see... analyzing for Ebonics? Hysterical PMS screaming? Indian accents? Control Tower being run by Chinese Nationals?

Wonder what led to this clusterf**k?
