Any love for the Zermatt Matterhorn?

Part of the fun for me is shooting different stocks/chassis; arguably it's the part of the system we get the most intimate with. I own a legacy AICS 2.0, a McMillan A5, and an ACC premier Gen 1 and I like them all. I've got my eyes on the Matterhorn, it looks comfortable and nice to shoot.

I don't shoot comps, I really just shoot in prone or from a tripod for fun. Anybody have experience with this chassis and how do you like it? Anything about using it annoy you?

New to bolt gun thread, question about AI based on use case

I have a lot of experience with shooting but it is primarily with pistols and small frame gas guns. Sometime around 2010, I purchased a GAP 260 Rem and had a lot of fun with it. With kids and life, I just could not spend the time to go do competitions and even had a hard time getting to a range so I ended up selling the rifle.

My kids are now out of the house and we bought a place outside Houston where I have room to shoot far (far for me, I can safely shoot almost 1,300 yards). So for the last eight months I have been reading this forum and the precision rifle blog. I have also reached out and talked to a bunch of people who have been incredibly helpful and friendly but I still have some really basic questions and I also want to check myself versus the real life experience of the forum.

I do not want to own half a dozen bolt guns, I would greatly prefer to own a single platform that allows for changing caliber by swapping barrels and bolts. The two choices that I landed on were Accuracy International and the Terminus Zeus. My goal is to be able to shoot 1,200 yards with the rifle reliably. I will also use the rifle on occasion to shoot feral pigs and deer. I do not expect to compete with the rifle, I also don't expect to ever sell it (my kids can deal with my gun collection after I am dead). I am not working with any real budget constraints in that I can afford an AI and a high end piece of glass.

1) My first question is, if you look at PRS ranking and the top 200 shooters none of them were using AI last year. Are the custom actions with Bartlien barrels just inherently more accurate than AI?

2) Am I being overly concerned with accuracy given my use case above?

3) Am I being a moron? Is a barrel swap system even necessary or could I just build a 6mm or a 6.5mm and be good to go for the things I want to do?

So that you know why I am thinking this way, I have been corresponding with a couple of people and one of them shoots for the US Army and he is uses a barrel swap system. He likes it because of the flexibility of the system and it's ability to scale up and down. He was telling me for instance that he spends a lot of time swapping to a 5.56 layout to work on wind calls for instance. The idea of a buying one rifle platform with a premium scope and then swapping in different barrels and bolts (instead of new firearms) is what is appealing to me, sort of future flexibility if I decide to change things up.

Looking for the FL peeps again

Ladies and gents, it's that time of year again. I'm on vacation in Kissimmee with the family.

Last year we talked about gators; as there were/are still a few that now appear to live at the resort we stay at. Kids have already dragged me to the ponds to see if there were any gators/turtles/wildlife, and most certainly there was.

This year I've got a different request. I'm a carpenter by trade, and I'm looking for a cool tool store to check out. We don't have many at home in ME, so being able to see/handle things before purchase becomes difficult. This is pretty much the extent of what we have at home:

www.bistools.com

Specifically, I'm looking for a Martinez hammer. Not that I can't buy one online, I'm just a brick and mortar type of guy. So, if anyone knows of a cool construction tool store around Kissimmee/Orlando/Orange Lake, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Chambering issue after expander mandrell.

Hello gentlemen,
after my last shooting session I measured my cases and I find some differences on headspace.
I tested some charges and the headspace are differenti from the low load to the ho load but from 1.4710" to 1.4700"

So I've made a resetting on the Forster FL Bushing sizing die for a 2 thou down from the fired case headspace, assuming that the 1.4710" of the hi loaded case are the start point.

My scheduling are the following:
- Bump the shoulder without the bushing for obtain the 2 thou of headspace (only for One or two case as reference).
Check on the chamber, ok!
- insert the bushing and resize the neck.
Check on the chamber, ok!
The bolt fall down free.
- expand the neck with mandrel.
Check un the chamber, ko!
The bolt don't fall down free, need finger help.

The headspace of the resized case are 1.4690"

I think that the mandrel, when open the neck, open also the apical section of the shoulder and change is angle.

If I think wrong can help me to solve this issue?

Thanks

New barrel or new gun?

I currently have been shooting my Bergara Ridge Wilderness in 308 a bit more and really liking the more precision stuff. It's been my hunting gun for a while and recently dropped it in a HMR stock. Its barrel is only 0.716" thick at the muzzle device so it definitely heats up pretty quick, especially with my suppressor on there.

I'm curious if it's better to get a thicker barrel, maybe some around 0.85"-0.95" or just get a different rifle. I do really prefer to use one gun so I can train like would hunt, which is why I'm looking at a sub 1" thick barrel. Keeps the weight down but offers increased rigidity and heat performance without weighing 20+ pounds.

However I do have my OEM stock still and could just get a barreled action in 308 R700 pattern. I could swap the stock back and move my scope over for hunting season and back to a range rifle the rest of the year while I save for something nice to put on there.

5/8" 24 tpi muzzle threading also for magnum and big bore caliber ?

I'm considering investing in magnum / big bore muzzle break & a suppressor for a few projects ( 300 RUM / 300 NM with ELR in mind).

Over the last few years I've standardised all my muzzle thread to 5/8" 24 tpi.

But for large caliber, long heavy barrel ( 28" - 30" - 32" ?) I'm wondering if it is not too small? A 3/4" 24 tpi would have more meat?

I already have a 7/8" 24tpi on my 33XC, but options are limited in that size.

Any thoughts or experiences to share on this topic?
