Trip to the "Desert" - OR - Oh That Insane Mirage

A friend and I took an epic trip to the desert this weekend. We left Friday late afternoon, stayed in a cabin near Truckee that night, then got up early and headed out to the "desert." Why the quotes around desert? See below

Waking up in the morning in Truckee - remember, we're 4 days til May here...

You can't tell from the pic, but it was still snowing.

We drove out to the desert and found this amazing dry lake bed out in the middle of nowhere. What a great place to shoot, right?

We set a 24" circular target at 1860, but...

Rain is coming.

The rain clears and we get the 300 PRC and spotting scope set up.

What's wrong with this picture?

The arrow is pointing at the target. Does that look like a 24" circle to you?

Here's the view through the spotting scope which is a little higher off the ground.

You can clearly see the mirror image with two "targets" shown. You can also see the kaleidoscope pattern through the spotting scope below (not the target area, but close by).

I'd never shot across a dry lake bed before, so this was a learning experience for me. What was amazing was how much mirage there was AND the mirror imaging taking place. The pictures look kind of bright, but in reality, at this point just after the rain, it was still cloudy. Mirage was just nasty. I tried a few shots at 1860, but we couldn't even see the misses. My assumption is that the atmospherics causing the mirror imaging also affected viewing the actual target location, so the POA and POI were significantly different.

We ended up moving the target to a closer (and higher) area to get it higher above the lake bed. Impacts were still about .3 mil under what I would have expected.

There will be a video forthcoming - regardless, it was a fun day.

Hello from the Carolinas

Super new to this sport of LR shooting and could appreciate guidance.

I have shot up to 1000 yards (1 MOA) using my 6.5 Creedmoor MPA PMR Pro II. Wouldn't mind a big trip out west to explore longer options.

I love the technical aspect. Can't help it - I'm an electrical and software engineer. Really into exterior ballistics - using my Garmin to log all rounds and maintain detailed shot history perf. Looking for others with similar interests, including custom ballistic software solutions, ML/AI, etc.

You can’t tell from the photos, but at least the medium rings are stamped 1-66. 😂 (I know, Ryan, wrong for any M40) No plans to shoot it anytime soon. I hope you don’t mind the small diversion from my M40xx madness.

Why no bespoke autoloaders?

With the current discussions of availability of custom bolt actions, this spawned a thought:
Since one of the big draws in premium REM.700SA bolt actions is the aftermarket support, why are there so few custom semiautos mfgs out there? You can build a Ruger 10/22 clone using zero Ruger parts, and still get phenomenal accuracy and reliability. Kidd is fielding awesome products and sponsoring talented competitors.
People have always said semi’s can’t compete for pure accuracy, yet anyone who has spent time behind one can definitely see the advantages of firing a rifle with instant follow-up and the fact you can shoot a condition, especially at longer distances. AR-15 parts have been adopted by many bolt action chassis, proof in the desirable nature of such modularity.
Dedicated rimfire AR conversion uppers are continuously being refined by the manufacturers, to the point you can tweak and tune many parts of the firing cycle.
Isn’t the rimfire world ready for full customs from a AR-15 platform?

Optics WTS: Athlon Helos BTR G2 6-24

$625 shipped insured. PPFF or Venmo. No trades.
Athlon Helos BTR Gen 2. 6-24 x 50. Illuminated MIL APRS6. Includes box, papers, caps and everything it came with.
Like new. Has been mounted. Rings, caps, throw lever NOT included.
Here’s a link but out of stock as are all the other Helos. These have incredible glass for this price point. I’m replacing this with a Cronus G2. I still own the 4-20 and 2-12. Both great scopes as well.

McMillan A1-3 info please

I'm been looking for the length of the forend of the McMillan A1-3 from the end of the bottom metal to where the forend flatness ends please. I need it for an Arca rail and want to maximize the length rather than have a stubby (I know the length doesn't matter, it how you use the rail)

Wondering if someone can help a brother out.
Thanks for your time⏱️

Long time member so before someone types it.............
1 Yes I searched for it, several forums and websites
2 Yes I can and will call McMillan if nobody has the info (I just hate bothering small shops when they are busy and to mess up the workdays flow, so would rather ask for help before impeding a business making money and product)
3 Yes I am aware X chassis or y stock also exist, but this is the stock I want to order, so as much as I apprieciate your love for a certain brand and loyalty to them, I want this stock. ;) 😂
I still love you, even if it offended you❤️ And you are special...to someone.....just not me, I'm taken

You are not in Olongapo any more....

What a coinicidence that on the eve of the Canadian election, someone drives into a crowd of dancing LBP's so the liberals can blame it on evil pasty conservatives?

They can't have mass shootings any more, so they have to have those mass-stabbings, mass-SUVing's, Mass Whapping-with-Canoe-Paddles...
