Maximum distance you can reliably first-shot impact 1MOA, 1/2MOA target?

Some background for context: In a previous life I was very much into weightlifting, power lifting and the science/programming angle. I recall an interview/podcast with a former member of the Bulgarian Olympic Weightlifting team, Max Aita, where he discussed their training methods and said that because they spent so much time training their lifts at their one-rep max, that on any given day he could walk into a gym and front squat 440# at a moments notice. No warmup, no preparation, just load the bar and go. Which is absolutely super-human strength, like unfathomable strength, and mental strength.

This led me to consider a parallel to precision rifle shooting: On ANY day, with your current skill level and your current equipment, with no preparation, what is the furthest distance you can confidently first-shot impact a 1 MOA target? 1/2 MOA? No warm, no practice, no dry-fire: setup your rifle system and send a single shot. What equipment are you using?

What distances would you consider to be bad, average, good, great, world-class in terms of precision rifle shooting capabilities?

SOLD SAM-R near clone with FN M16 lower

Selling my near clone SAM-R service rifle.

The SAM-R rifles are some of the rarest of the US issued rifles during the GWOT era. Only something like 300 were ever fielded and they were used by US Marine infantry marksmen in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of the parts on this rifle are 100% clone correct, or are very close which act as good place holders. The barrel only has 80rds down it, and it shoots sub ¾" 100yd groups with BH ammo. This rifle will make an excellent shooter or uncommon collector project for whoever purchases.

The last picture is a first generation SAM-R being shown to a group of Marines. The first ~50 SAM-R's produced had two piece gas block front sights before they moved to the KAC FSGB combo.

Parts are as follows,
Lower: As-new unused FN M16 Military Collector series complete lower
Upper: Colt C marked early 2000's T-marked M4 feedramps
BCG: Almost mint early 2000's Colt C marked and MPC marked
Barrel: 20" Compass Lake Engineering SAM-R profile Bartlein 1/7t 5.56 (CLE did the SAM-R barrels for the US Gov, but with Kreiger barrels)
Gas Block: Yankee Hill Machine railed GB (not clone correct, but acting as a visually similar place holder until a SAM-R GB pops up)
Handguard: Knights Armament RAS Long FF PN:21318
Muzzle Device: Surefire limited A2-style Flash Hider
BUIS: Knights Armament USMC marked micro rear and NSN marked shrouded front (both military surplus)
Magazine: I will include a surplus Colt 20rd 5.56 magazine with old school metal follower

Does not include pelican case in picture.

Willing to sell the entire rifle as is for $1800 or just the complete upper for $1300 shipped.
I will consider parting out if you want enough of it. PM me.

What is this "orb"?

What is this "orb"? We watched yet another launch this morning and shortly after take off and the rocket leaves into the atmosphere, I'll post the rocket video later, I see this "orb" just hanging in the sky. You can see it at 10 seconds in. I've seen this "orb" before while leaving for work around 4ish am on many non launch morning. It's always in the same location and It's too bright to be a star and it doesn't move. It's not an airplane as, again, it does not move and is much too bright.

Noveske Grendel + Underwood 110 GR = G.O.A.T.

Hit the range today to dial in a couple things for an upcoming pig trip.

Brought "the one" just to verify zero of my 20" Grendel, a Noveske build, all their parts, barrel, etc other than a Smoke Composite stock and grip. Topped with a Leupold VX-6 HD 3-18X, 50mm, and a Thunderbeast Ultra 7.

I usually shoot Hornady 123 SST, which routinely shoots sub MOA out of that gun. Today I grabbed some Underwood 110 gr as its just sitting on a shelf. They stopped making it in Grendel so I went into a conservation mindset, but realized - might as well burn through it over the next couple seasons.

1) POA/POI vs the SST - nearly identical at 100 yards.

2) I realized I'd grabbed a 4 rd mag - I usually shoot 5 - but at $3/rd, I'm doing a $12 experiment, let's see how much adjustment we need... results were enough to make me take a break and reflect on how much I wanted to do that again.

To be fair, my next group was at least... .5 - .6 MOA as I was chasing this dragon, but I think it is safe to say this was a personal best. I know it isn't a 10 round phenom, but I'll take it... with a little luck this is an unbeatable combo in the small frame.

Naturally, Noveske stopped making the Grendel barrels and Underwood no longer makes the ammo - but, as the saying goes - I got mine 🕺

Making 30-BR from Sig 277 brass

@45-90
Hope you don't mind me tagging you into this thread since I read where you made Dasher brass from the parent 277 Hybrid brass.

I ordered just 100 to play around with to see if I can reasonably make brass for supersonic use only.

I've done case forming before with 17 Ackley Hornet, 17 Mach IV, 22 BR, 30 Herrett, 309 JDJ and a few others.

With the exception of the 30 Herrett, the other brass was realistically a simple neck, fire-form and go.

What I'd like to figure out is the dies and steps necessary to get the Fury case shortened and formed to the 30-BR.

Is there an easy way to just roll the shoulder down and cut the brass to the proper length?

Is it more like using the old multi- step forming die?

I noticed you have removable shoulder/neck buttons for some of your forming dies.

Is that the direction I need to go?

I'm on a retiree budget, so expensive forming dies are out of the question.

The only lathe I have access to is the little 7x13 Grizzly in my garage. Not really the right tool for creating dies and whatnot.

My purpose for even thinking about this is to see if I can get close to 110 and 125gr 308 performance in the little 1.5" case.
I believe i can get close, but only experimentation will get the answer to me.

The other use for the rifle will be standard Lapua brass and a 240-250gr bullet for subsonic use.
I'd be shooting it to 500 yds to replicate practice to a mile+.

I know, I'd be duplicating the subsonic 300 BO with a larger case capacity and might run into issues with it.

What are your thoughts?

Are the cases fairly easy to form without spending a ton on dies?
