22 Creedmoor shoulder case bump

Good morning and Happy New Year,

I am putting together a 22 Creedmoor AR10, the barrel is KAK Industries 18" 1X7 twist. I purchased 6mm CM Hornady brass and sized them down to a 22 CM dimensions using a Lee die, I also used a Hornady Headspace Comparator and the bump on the shoulder measured 1.530, after about 5 cases I used a L.E. Wilson Case Length Headspace Gauge and noticed that it was sticking out about 1/32" to 1/16" so I lowered the die ever so slightly and re-sized it and again tested it with the Wilson case gauge and it was perfect this took the shoulder bump to 1.525, I just finished cleaning the brass my next step is to anneal then trim.

So this is my question, I am hoping that a member here has a Hornady factory unfired 22 CM cartridge and measure the shoulder bump and post it here.

Thank you ever so much.

55’s not fully cycling in 223 Wylde 18”

My boys wanted me to start loading some bulk 223/5.56 rounds so they can do more shooting with their AR’s.

I put together several loads and tested them at the range yesterday. All functioned fine except the hornady 55 FMJ’s. While they actually gave one of the best groups of the day, they failed to cycle properly. Most would eject and reset trigger but failed to strip next round. This happened with multiple mags. Several would try to strip next round but road over the rim of the case and cartridge was bound up between bolt and chamber. I’m not sure why, as the velocity average was 2905 fps from my 18” 1/7 twist BA 223 Wylde barrel mid length gas, standard gas block and carbine spring/buffer. Any thoughts what the issue might be. All the others functioned fine.

Here are the loads:

Hornady 55 grain FMJ
R-P cases
CCI 41 primers
OAL- 2.204”
Lee Factory crimp in canalure.
TAC 24.5
V= 2905 FPS

SS-109 62 grain FMJ (pulls)
IVI 85 NATO cases
CCI 41 primers
OAL- 2.243”
Lee Factory crimp in canalure.
TAC 24.5
V= 2849 FPS

SMK 77 grain HPBT
R-P cases
CCI 41 primers
OAL- 2.26”
Lee Factory crimp
TAC 22.5
V= 2472 FPS
TAC 22.8
V= 2510
TAC 23.0
V= 2527
TAC 23.2
V= 2560

Savage Model 10

A long time ago right after being done with my USMC service, before the PRS matches were the norm, before the Remington 700 aftermarket options that were DIY were widely available and Creedmoor named cartridges were the thing, I wanted a precision rifle to ding steel plates at long range and that I could use (always hoping I never have to) during a national emergency if needed. Requirements were a threaded 24" heavy barrel, detachable magazine, chambered in .308 Winchester to simplify logistics in an emergency (Federal Gold Medal was around $16 for 20 rounds at that time) and being able to do most of the work on my garage bench. Choices that fit my budget were the Remington SPS Tactical or the Savage 10 FCP-SR. The 700 made the least sense for what I was trying to accomplish. I ended up getting the Savage 10 you see in these pictures.

I installed the barreled action in a Choate Machine & Tool Custom Tactical stock; at that time, that was the only option for the model 10 that came with their propietary magazine system. Installed a Smith Enterprises Good Iron brake, a Nightforce 20 moa piccatiny scope base, Glades Armory tactical bolt handle, Harris bipod and an excellent Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 8.5-25x50 scope with Badger Ordnance rings I already owned. Felt no need to change the accu-trigger. Last thing I did was a sponge camo paintjob and adding an arca plate to shoot from a tripod.

It had been sitting in my safe for the past 6 years without being shot since I have mostly been shooting vintage American rimfire rifles and 1903 Springfield rifles in competition. Pulled it out of the safe a few weeks ago to clean, inspect, fire it and make sure it is still zeroed and all my data is still accurate

The rifle came out a performer, averaging 1/2" moa or better at 100 yards, prone, with Federal GMM and also performed well at long ranges. The magazine system has been the one thing that has plagued the rifle since I bought it. It is finicky to operate, load and insert in the rifle; you have to "hold your tongue just right" to get it to work properly when loading the rifle and during rapid fire. It is also heavy at 18.6 pounds unloaded, mostly thanks to the very heavy Choate stock (it is a solid stock indeed). Bolt fitment could be better but I think that is something common on all Savage rifles with non target actions. Accuracy wise, I was shooting equally to other folks with very expensive custom tactical rifles. Is it a good rig for PRS matches? No. Is it a capable tactical long range rifle? Absolutely.

In recent years better, lighter options for what I wanted back then have become available for the do it yourselfer in a budget, even affordable factory rifles that meet the criteria I had at that time. Times change, we work, marry, have kids, priorities and interests change. Not sure if at this point I want to spend the extra cash to upgrade the bolt assembly to a PTG unit for smoother operation and upgrade to an AICS magazine system; sadly Jeff from CDI passed away and he was the go-to man for those conversions.

Enjoy the pictures.

Weapon Light Rabbit whole

I know this has been beat to death and I don't want to dig that horse up and beat it again, so if there is a thread that answers this please share the link and I'll leave everyone alone. Want to put a Weapon light on my AR I own a Stream Light ProTac HL X PRO. Bought it a year ago never mounted it on the gun I bought it for. Now i see the Surefire scout turbo pro m640dft, looks great made in the good ole USA, alot of talking heads puffing it up (definitely for some $$$ gotta pay the bills!!) but damn expensive. My plan is run what I've got now to train etc... then see if need arises to drop the coin on the surefire. Is the Surefire really that much better?? I'm not a guy that has to have the best gear but I do like for my shit to work and be reliable. Any help guidance or opinions would be appreciated!!! Happy New Year BTW!!

FN 49 Sniper OIP Scope

I recently by chance found the FN 49 Sniper OIP Scope in an antique shop and have tried to determine which variant it is. All the other threads refer to Luxembourg, Belgian, Egyptian and other. The numbering on the scopes clearly shows where it is from, but my scope does not have any of these codes. Mine shows markings of C.B. F.P. No 161. I can not find any reference to these codes on the internet. Has anyone seen this before.

18" 6.5 PRC and 135 A tips

Looking for some general information on reloading for a short (18") 6.5 prc with 135 a Tips (156 berger load data also would be helpful). Mostly looking for powder recommendations as most data is for 24" Barrels and longer. I have quite a bit of varget, but see H1000, retumbo and N565 recommended a lot. Just not sure if these are still good routes to go for a short barrel. If anyone has any recommendations and can post starting loads and what speeds they are seeing from these shorter barrels it would be appreciated
