Thoughts? Christiansen Arms Mesa vs Tikka T3X

I’m currently looking at getting a new bolt action rifle that will be used for an upcoming Elk hunt as well as some long range shooting and It’ll be in 300 Win Mag.

I’ve been doing a bunch of research and have nixed the Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 BDL, Howa 1500 and Winchester 70. So many things to look at that it makes your head spin. All were so close that it came down to personal preferences.

From the research I narrowed my choices down to the Mesa and T3X. Here I’m stuck as they both have very good pluses. The Tikka is cheaper by a few hundred but not enough to be the deciding factor.

Anyone have any opinion on these two? Appreciate it!

Nf Atacr made in usa vs Japan

Probably been answered. Probably is opinion. But u noticed the 4-20 say on the bottom "designed, assembled in usa with usa and global componets" or something along those lines.

The 7-35 just says "made in japan". If this were 1970 I'd say hands down the 4-20 is better. Now a days I'm guessing most will say same quality? What do the others say? 4-16 and 5-25?

Chainsaw decision help...

So I own a sawmill and will be adding a third chainsaw to my stable. I have a stihl MS260 with an 18" bar, along with an echo cs620p with 24" and 27" bars. I will be going echo because I don't really like the stihl since they've changed their carburation (I hate the whole green push) plus they've gotten prohibitively expensive for IMO not much more quality.

The 260 is my all-arounder, and the 620p is my felling saw. I'm trying to decide between a CS501p (basically another MS260) or maybe something lighter, like a CS2511P or even CS2511T. I've also thought about selling the 620 and getting a loop handle model, but that's an aside.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bonus post from the "Duck", the secret of time travel has been cracked by your's truly, details inside.

Often the subject of science fiction & having no notable accolades as a scientist myself, a frequently discussed topic has been cracked by my POV (and without any help from anyone of the user base here either).

Full disclosure- thus far the Time Machine only goes backwards but I'm still working on that. But here's my research...

In order of sequence of what can literally transport one decades in the past...

Sight- our environment is constantly changing. Be observant... the smallest thing will bring you back to childhood.

Touch- Don't underestimate this, folks of a certain age will understand where I'm going here... shag carpets...where are you at after reading that? Dollars to donuts if that resonates with you- you can pinpoint a very specific year.

Taste- Oh boy we better strap in at this point- the stories I could tell which for one reason or another could never be replicated except in the past... Promise you that regardless of what your opinion of me is- you grew up with a certain dish that a certain family member made and for whatever reason it stood out to you/was unique and said family member is likely no longer with you. Guarantee it'll bring you back to a different time.

Sound- I'm not referencing your "top 20" type of music, rather I'm talking about the "other" music. This one is amongst the most powerful transporter for time travel. These are the songs/background noise from one's past when milestones were met. This is the fuel to transport one back decades but still not the strongest element in what I've discovered.

Smell- that's right, smell. That's my #1 fuel in my Time Machine and above all else. I don't care if you're 60+ years old something like the smell of a campfire will instantly transport you back 50+ years ago in cub scouts in a part of your brain that just isn't accessed any other way.

In tonight's episode of "How the 'Duck' Quacks...", a thread about Hollywood & the quality of movies they put out.

Howdy Hide,

Tonight I'd like to discuss movies, particularly movies that strike some sort of internal chord for one reason or another. To clarify- I'm not personally interested in your "all-time" favorite movie, nor am I personally interested in discussing the one of the better movies you've seen recently that stood above the recent crap that's been coming out. Rather I'm talking about movies that either have a theme or plot that for one reason or another resonates within you for one reason or another. The good news is you don't have to share why it stands out to you personally but I'd request you identify the movie and what part of the plot or what scene made it memorable to you.

Hopefully I'm able to keep this post less "wordy" than the last one I started.

For me- I'm a bit of a sucker for powerful monologues. Don't know why but I personally love when the movie is over and there's a particular part of the dialogue that stays with me and causes me to dwell on what was said. So having explained that- to start this thread off, I'll share one of those movies that "checks" said boxes...

"Good Will Hunting"

As mentioned, I too will refrain from delving into the "why" it is on the top of my list but suffice to say (as alluded to) it is related to the monologues & plot contained in that movie.

It's a shame (in my opinion/per my preferences) that we don't tend to see these type of movies made anymore.

As a "bonus" movie, I'll also throw in a personal appreciation of the flick "Secondhand Lions".

Any thoughts on the topic?

These are the nine gun-control bills with a description and notes for each bill:

HB 1597, Delegate Feggans, requires all firearms in a home, that are not being carried on or about a person, to be unloaded and placed in a locked container if there is a minor in the home or if there is a prohibited person in the home. A gun may only be stored loaded if it is in a biometric safe. Guns left in a vehicle must be secured in a locked box or container that is not visible from outside the vehicle, must be affixed to the vehicle, and the vehicle must be locked, too. Glove boxes and consoles cannot be used unless specifically designed for gun storage. Gun dealers must post signage about the law and there is also a provision to educate the public on firearm storage. Biometric safes are more expensive than non-biometric safes. Biometric safes can be unreliable when being used under stress and require batteries to work. Why are biometric safes the only option for storing a loaded firearm? This bill punishes the victim if their gun is stolen from a vehicle and the firearm is not stored per the requirements of this bill. Not all lock boxes have a way to be affixed to a vehicle. Not all lock boxes can be easily hidden. If a person is a passenger in someone else’s vehicle and must leave their gun in the car to use a restroom at a Virginia rest area, for example, they would have no way to comply with this bill.

HB 1607, Delegate Helmer, prohibits the sale, possession, transfer, and transport of an “assault firearm” made on or after July 1, 2025. It also prohibits sale, possession, transfer, and transport of an “assault firearm” to anyone under the age of 21. Magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and were made on or after July 1, 2025, are prohibited. The U.S. Supreme Court has said in both DC v Heller, and recently The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v Bruen, that any firearm “in common use” is protected by the Second Amendment. The guns and magazines targeted by this bill are among the most common guns and magazines in the United States, making this bill unconstitutional.

HB 1608, Delegate Helmer,
allows one of the most highly regulated industries, the firearms industry, to be sued civilly for a variety of already illegal actions. It also holds the manufacturers and sellers of even the most benign of firearm accessories, like a butt stock or a gun case, liable to a civil lawsuit if it doesn’t “properly” protect that item from theft or misuse by a criminal. How could a firearm accessory seller reasonably know if they were selling a gun sling to a prohibited person? This bill is designed to have a chilling effect on all aspects of the firearms industry. At a time when the federal government is pulling FFL licenses for even the tiniest and most benign of paperwork mistakes, this bill is just piling on with more unreasonable ways to destroy the firearm industry.

HB 1622, Delegate Laufer, creates a $500 civil penalty and subjects a vehicle to towing if a person leaves a visible handgun in an unattended vehicle. The car owner should not be at fault even if a criminal opens an unlocked car door to steal a firearm. It is the criminal who is solely to blame. This bill would put a handgun in the possession of, and under the control of, a tow truck company! Punish criminals and stop harassing good people.

HB 1660, Delegate Jones,
redefines a “trigger activator” as a “conversion kit, tool, accessory, or device” that alters the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm to “mimic automatic weapon fire or used to increase the rate of fire to a faster rate than that possible for a person to fire such semi-automatic firearm unassisted…” The terms in this bill are so vague as to be meaningless. At what exact point does a firearm “mimic automatic weapon fire,” considering that different automatic firearms have different rates of fire? And how does someone determine what the rate of fire is for a person shooting a firearm unassisted? There are professional shooters, such as world champion Jerry Miculek, who can shoot a firearm without assisting devices at eye-popping speeds. Unadulterated semi-automatic firearms can be “bump fired” by simply holding them the right way.

HB 1797, Delegate Helmer,
severely restricts concealed handgun permit recognition with other states. Currently, Virginia honors permits from all other states, which, in turn, allows Virginians to be able to carry in most of those states. Permit holders from other states have been peacefully carrying in Virginia for years. This bill is an unjust and demeaning slap in the face to law-abiding Virginia gun owners, as it will reduce the number of states where a Virginia permit holder can carry a handgun for self-defense. It will also discourage gun owners outside of Virginia from visiting the Commonwealth, effecting the state’s economy. This bill is a solution in search of a problem.

HB 1869, Delegate McClure, makes battery in a “dating relationship” a misdemeanor and takes away the right to purchase, possess, or transport a firearm for three years. This amounts to a lifetime ban on firearms federally since it does not also take away, and restore, all civil rights. Misdemeanors should never take away a civil right. This will also not stand up to court challenge under the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision as there was no history or tradition of taking away a person’s right to keep and bear arms over misdemeanor battery of anyone.

HB 1876, Delegate Callsen, restricts firearms at public institutions of higher education by requiring such firearms be part of an authorized program or activity inside a building. A solution in search of a problem. Higher education students are adults and have a right to self-defense.

HB 1960, Delegate Bennett-Parker,
requires a person with a protective order against them or a person with a domestic violence conviction to surrender, sell, or turn their guns over to someone 21-years-old or older and someone who does not live with them. It requires the person to be advised that if a police officer believes they have not turned over all their guns, that the officer can get a search warrant to look for any such guns. There are multiple problems with the bill as written. If a husband and wife co-own a shotgun for home defense, for example, and the husband gets a protective order issued against him, the wife would no longer have access to that co-owned shotgun. That punishes the wife and needlessly endangers her life. There is also the question of not allowing a person 18 to 20-years-old to retain the guns. A person in that age range can legally possess rifles, shotguns, and handguns. Young adults should be able to hold the guns.

-

These are the two gun-rights bills:

HB 1559, Delegate Williams, clarifies that a person who is renewing a concealed handgun permit does not have to provide any proof of training or demonstration of competence. This corrects a problem with some judges misreading the law.

HB 1569, Delegate Wiley, lowers the maximum concealed handgun permit fee from $50 to $25, by lowering the maximum local law-enforcement can charge for the background check from $35 to $10. Originally the maximum permit fee was set at $50, which included approximately $25 to go to the FBI for fingerprinting applicants. In 2012 the General Assembly repealed the fingerprinting requirement, but never got around to reducing the maximum permit fee accordingly. Clearly this change is long overdue. Background checks are now quick and easy for most applicants, causing many sheriffs in Virginia to do the background checks for free. $10 should more than cover the costs of the background check.

Huber Trigger in my 24/47 (Adjustments/Expectations)

Anyone ever deal with John Huber's adjustable two-stage triggers in a Mauser. A couple years ago I was so frustrated trying to get his dual ball bearing adjustable two-stage in my M48 I had to send the barreled action to him to dial in. It's not bad but not amazing. Like my M48, I cloned my 24/47 into Yugo civil war era sniper. I’d like to have a nice modern two-stage adjustable (or not) feel with hopefully a 1-2lb free and easy first stage meeting a 3ish lb break over The Wall. I’d rather not go Timney, as I understand, will require dramatic modification of the stocks.

M48 24-47 Yugo SKS.jpg

I'd like to do the same with my mint-barrel Persian 98/29 but am wary of any stock mod as that's far more valuable/rare than M48s or 24/47s. Gunsmiths and precision shooter (especially Fudd sporters guys) have been tweaking, building, modifying Mauser actions for decades. I spoke at length with John a couple years ago and, while no doubt a brilliant man, went off on all kinds of tangents that I just could not follow i.e. psychology of the “break” and timing theory about meeting and crossing “the wall”. One of those guys that’s possibly on “the Spectrum” (whatever that mean nowadays). I just couldn’t follow. The million-times photocopied notes and hand-drawings that he includes with his trigger are just too cryptic for me to make sense of.

While I can field strip pretty much any rifle I own I am admittedly a bit ignorant and am not competent to make do-it-yourself modifications. I am not up to filing, grinding, etc, an would rather bring o send the rifle to someone who can. I finally wrote this note (below) to him and look forward to how he responds.

John, I put your 2-stage in my 24/47. Unlike the M48 a couple years ago I will need to relive the stock a little it. Not prepared to commit to that just yet.

The initial 1st stage travel weight to the wall is around 4 lb and at the break is around 6lb. Worse than the original stock trigger.

How to lighten up initial pull?

  • Is it a matter of snipping off small bits of the trigger’s sear spring to lighten?
  • Are there lighter versions out there commercially? I checked Wolff www.gunsprings.com and they don’t appear to sell anything
  • Sometimes when I half-pull the trigger and release it just dangles as loose.
Bearing adjustments.

  • I’ve twisted and played with the bearing screws several times in many directions and just can’t really achieve anything meaningful other than fire/no-fire.
My hope/goal is to get a fairly light initial pull that breaks at “the wall” at about 3ish lbs. Can this be done with your trigger set? Any other modifications? People have been tweaking and modifying Mauser actions for years so I have to imagine I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel with my aspirations, although, I am not a do-it-yourselfer. Was hoping this would be a drop in affair with basic tweaks to dial in.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to get a match/precision style trigger (if not this one) in a milsurp rifle w/o mods?

(BTW, on an unrelated note, Josh Smiths adjustable 2-stage triggers for 91/30 are amazing and simple to install tweak. A REAL plus for any PU Sniper shooters).

Headsets

My buddy and I are looking to get headsets. Mainly using them while predator hunting if we split up on a stand. He had a cheap set and I believe we were getting a lot of wind noise from whoever was talking into the mic.

It gets cold sometimes so I don’t know if I want the big ones like ear pro.

Here is what I was leaning towards. It will be easy to wear with a beanie and hood I believe.

Anyone have input on these or something like them?

Newest Gunbroker Aquisition: TarHunt KSG

Kind of an odd ball but I scored a TarHunt KSG 12 gauge bolt shotgun. These are pretty obscure to anyone that can freely hunt with a rifle all year long but as far as slug guns go, these things are legendary. Smith who makes them was the lead engineer for Lightfield (while they made slugs). McMillan stock, Jewell trigger, 2 round magazine. Growing up reading books from the early 90’s about slug hunting, I only dreamed of owning one. Serial 0008. Now to find the right slugs for it since Lightfield is no more 🤦‍♂️ Cheers!

Savage Axis II Precision 6.5CM bolt issue?

Guys,

Brand new to the forum. Today, I unboxed my new Savage Axis II Precision rifle. All looked good, bolt inserted and close/lift a bit tight. Trigger good. Prior to buying the rifle I had about 100 pcs of once fired range brass and prepped the cases (mostly Hornady), cleaned, sized, trimmed (1.910). I made a dummy round as I set up my press. The round passed the plunk test and OAL 2.820. 140gr ELD match. I wanted to check the bolt function and while it fed a round, closing the bolt felt extremely tight. The bullet is not contacting the lands. I also took some empty cases which were sized, measured and checked in the case gauge, but closing the bolt was even harder. I don't have any factory ammo as of this writing, but I am curious if anyone else has experienced this before?
