East TN

Hey ya'll, I'm Josh from East TN, I've been shooting NRL22 (and a lil bit of MARS) since late 2021, the deeper into it I get, the more fun I have, and the more I inevitably invest in gear :) . ORSA is my home range, we shoot the first Saturday of the month. I've been reading the Hide for a while, and finally decided to join the discussion. See ya'll around!

Firearms WTS: NIB Browning BAR mk3 300wm

I have for sale or trade a brand new Browning BAR Mark 3 in 300wm. I picked this up at a charity event and don’t plan on using it. I would trade for a lot of different rifles of similar value. 22CM or similar. Then anything bigger than the 300wm.

$1,200 shipped to your FFL.

2A ALERT: TENNESSEE. Antigun nonprofits hoping to push stricter gun laws for upcoming TN legislative session. BUCKEYES GET IT DONE with new pro2A laws

Another attack directed at the capital of Americana and the shooting sports culture.

The Tennessee legislative session starts next Tuesday on 01/14/2025 and several non-profit orgs, including the antigun group "Voices for a Safer Tennessee" are hoping to push their "concerns" to legislators to pass new antigun bills.

I have absolutely no, ZERO interest in reaching any "common ground" with leftists and their invasive pest ideology, nor even spending any effort to listen to what they have to squawk out of their yappers. Leftist policies have done nothing but render populations of hardworking people disarmed in their jurisdictions, livelihoods and businesses ruined, homes and businesses burned, and economies circling the drain. There is only ONE message that needs to be sent to those who want to further desecrate home and hearth. And that is:

6 ARC headspace

So... got an 18" 6 ARC barrel with a rifle gas system, and type II bolt a while back, and finally got around to shooting it not too long ago. It's a new cartridge for me, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been using the L.E. Wilson case gauges, along with their case gauge depth micrometer in other cartridges with great results... so I was a little shocked when I dropped a fired case in the gauge and it visibly stood proud of the top  Ran the depth mic down, and it showed it at +11 over '0'. Plunking an unfired factory round in there showed as -3 or so. That range seems... excessive, to me.

Like most comparators, that thing is still a 'relative' measurement. I dug out the appropriate shoulder angle insert for my Sinclair headspace comparators, mounted them on the Mitutoyo calipers, and zeroed things out. Loaded round measured 1.128", fired cases measured 1.141" or so. Yikes.

Coughed up the $$$ for a set of go, no-go and *field* gauges in 6 ARC. When they finally arrived, I got the following measurements:

Loaded round: 1.128"
Go gauge: 1.130"
No-go gauge: 1.134"
Field gauges: 1.138"
Fired brass: 1.141"

Then, I went and pulled the upper apart, popped out the ejector pin from the bolt, cleaned the bolt and chamber (never seen that much brass buildup in *either* the bolt or the chamber of my .223 ARs), and found that the bolt would rotate closed on the go gauge (as it should)... but it also closed on the no-go gauge, and damn near closed on the field gauge.

I double checked the depth of the bolt face; it is a type 2 (0.136" deep) bolt.

I'm guessing this isn't supposed to be the 'normal' amount of shoulder stretch on firing factory ammo in a 6 ARC barrel?

Any ideas what might be the likely culprit here? Chamber set up for a type 1 bolt (0.125" deep) instead of a type 2? Seems like that would almost account for the difference I'm seeing here. Or more likely the chamber is just f$cked up, some other way?

The fired brass coming out measuring longer than the chamber is another one that had me going 'WTF?!?' Someone else suggested that it might point towards a gas system issue, with the bolt trying to unlock before the pressure has dropped enough for the case shoulder to release from the chamber walls.

Snow Day Tinkering

So, it's a snow day in my neck of the woods. Instead of playing in the snow I decided to play in the reloading room. A while back I picked up some blaster ammo. This is Federal 36 gr. HP ammo. I decided to break out my Waltz die and see how the HP stem worked. This is what I ended up with:

Now I just have to wait till the weather warms up a bit and see how it performs. At advertised 1260 fps quiet isn't the goal.

Help me choose a bolt action in .50

Hello everyone!

I've always wanted a .50 for my collection, and since only bolt action .50s are allowed where I live, and not everything is available, I was wondering if you could help me narrow down my selection.

First of all I want a mag-fed rifle, not a single shot.
Second it's going to be run suppressed.
Third since I'm paying quite a lot, I'd like a high quality rifle that will last me a while, even though it's purely recreational.

My options are the following:
Steyr HS50 M1
Casex CDX50 Tremor
Barrett M95
AI AX50
DSR50
Desert tech HTI
Voere X5

What would you get?

Night Vision Comparing Night Vision Devices Lowlight Innovations MH-1 vs Manticore-R UANVB-FCR Ruggedized

Hello all, I’m reaching out for some night vision advice. I’m looking at purchasing my first set of dual tubes. I am primarily looking at two housings. Low Light innovations MH-1 and the Manticore-R UANVB- FCR. As the cost is substantial for either of these units built out. I was hoping that someone on here potentially had hands on experience with both or either one of these units and what your thoughts are on them? I’m really wondering what your thoughts are on the housings as tube specs vary based on what you pick or spec. I’m open to other options if someone has another housing that they like.
I am wanting a housing that is metal and not a polymer type and I do want a unit with manual gain and option for external battery pack.

I’m just trying to make sure I do my research as either are very expensive. Thanks all and I appreciate any input!

Help with decision on replacing barrel or new rifle

Hey all,

First time poster. I'm hoping to get some outside thoughts.

I have a Remington 700 chambered in .308 winchester with a 1:12 twist. This rifle is a shooter with Hornady Amax 165 or BTHP 168. Holes touching at 100 yards. When California moved to 100% Lead Free for all hunting I tried out about 8 different loads from 150gr (lowest I could find) to 168gr. I tried Winchester, Hornady, Barnes, Buffalo Bore, etc. The best grouping I could achieve with the copper was about 1.5-2". I believe this was directly correlated to the slow twist rate of the barrel and the longer coper bullet. Needless to say, it has shaken my shooting confidence and I do not feel comfortable hunting the current setup as long as Lead-free is required.

I love the .308 round from both a practical and nostalgic viewpoint. My hunting ranges are typically 200-400 yards but also like to do some target shooting in the sub 1000 yard range. I primarily hunt pigs but getting into Mule Deer hopefully soon.

I have been doing a lot of research and I also am impressed with the 6.5 PRC but not sure there's enough of a practical difference for me to purchase a new rifle outright. I'm not totally convinced there's a downside to the 6.5 PRC within 400 yards based on bullet weight alone and the longer range stability looks promising. I am not really concerned with barrel life. I'm also not totally convinced I need the better ballistics of the 6.5 PRC based on my use case.

These are the options I am considering:

Option 1

Rebarrel with .308 Hart Barrel - Light Varmint Contour with 1:10 twist)
Debating between 18" and 20" still
Straight Flutes
Cerakote Action and Barrel
Treaded with a VG6 Gamma
Drop it into a KRG Bravo Chassis
Total in, I'll be around $2,000ish (effectively the same as options 2 or 3)

Pros: Check's all the boxes I'm looking to check
Cons: 11 MONTH wait time for Hart Re-barreling, still have 1 rifle

Option 2
Seekins Precision just released the details on Havak PH3 which has a 20" barrel on short actions and it ticks all the boxes.

Purchase Havak PH3 in .308 with 20" barrel and supplement with 6.5 PRC bolt face and barrel later using it as a switch barrel rifle. I'm not sure the 1:11.25 twist will be great for copper though. Sell my current .308 or re-barrel it in another caliber later.

Pros: Ticks all the boxes and possibly recoup some money from the sale of my current Remington 700. Really like the action and look of the PH3. Stock fits me really well.
Cons: Hassle of selling my current .308. Not sure if I want to go the barrel swapping route. Nostalgia makes me want to keep my first bolt action.
Concern: Only a 1:11.25 twist. Not sure how this will work with Copper.

Option 3
Purchase Havak PH3 in 6.5 PRC and re-barrel my existing .308 later.

Pros: I would have 2 rifles. 2 calibers.
Cons: Would not be able to hunt with the .308 until/if I re-barrel later.
Concern: If I go this route, would I be better off going long action 7 PRC instead of having a .308 and 6.5 PRC both?

What would you guys do? What am I not considering?
