I have a couple AR 15's in 556, nothing fancy, just PSA's, and a really nice Mega monolithic rail in 6.5 CM. I love the Mega, it is deadly accurate. I've been thinking about different calibers so the question is, what calibers can I switch to on each rifle. Second question, how will the lowers mate with non matching uppers, like an LMT or LaRue on the PSA, or anything desirable on the Mega? Mostly looking at the 556 as they are a bit more affordable to shoot. Pro's and Con's of various calibers? Thanks

The garmin has made tracking speed so much easier that I find myself using it way more than I ever did my Labradar. This has really improved my temp tables and made my cleaning regimen more precise.

I created a few charts from my last 3 trips out here in Florida and thought you guys might find them interesting, too. I was expecting to see a more flat slope from shot to shot, with the beginning or end (heat) showing more deviation, but I see a pretty consistent up and down (despite the low SD and ES).

The last group is flame annealed, which I normally don't do but want to test how it changes my SD/ ES (this is a small sample so I'm not drawing conclusions from it yet)

The rifle is a 20" 300 Win mag with a straight-proof barrel and Dead Air Nomad. Shoting Lapua, h4350, berger 215 hybrid and 215m.

I’m currently loading 223 and 308
Process on fired brass:
-Decap and clean primer pocket.
-wet tumble
-anneal
-lube and run through a reading FL die
-than SB die bumping should 0.002
- neck tension using the Lee collet die.

Both with the 223 and 308, when adjusting the die to get the 2 thou, the die stops short of sizing the whole case.
Eg using my gauge for the 308, fired brass is 1.623”, bumping back to 1.621”. If I want the die to go the full length of the case so it’s all sized. The length becomes 1.615”.

Question:
What options are there for a true full length sizing die?
From what I’ve read. Eric cortina, maybe SAC. Zero however I’ve got a 7/8 thread press.

Also I’m looking to barrel swap the 308 to 6.5cm down the track and have the option to use both calibres. So having to buy a set of dies each cal gets expensive.

Also I’m in Australia so dies are hard to come by unless the ship overseas

The other day I took a break from the holidays and rewatched the movie "Gettysburg" and since then have been doing a bit of research on Gen Longstreet. You don't need to be a Civil War buff to appreciate this post but regardless of how you feel about the Union/Confederacy or that part of history, he's really an interesting (to me at least) part of the Gettysburg story.

Just as a quick back story/catchup- Longstreet graduated from West Point in 1842. By all accounts he was far from a model cadet. He had a history of racking up demerits and performing poorly in his studies. The records that I've found thus far was in 1842, 56 individuals graduated from West Point and Longstreet (being among them) was ranked... 54th in his class.

Despite his academic standings, it seems that he was still popular amongst his fellow classmates (perhaps he was the class clown?) and among the friendships he cultivated during his years at West Point, one of which happened to be Ulysses S. Grant who graduated a year later in 1843. Again- you don't need to be a historian but that in itself is rather interesting.

Skipping over a decade or two- despite graduating at the absolute bottom of his class in 1842, he quickly advanced through the officer ranks and once the Civil War broke out he eventually became Gen Robert E. Lee's "right hand man" and most trusted General and advisor by Lee's own accounts.


Ok- now that we're all caught up- back to Gettysburg. Knowing most folks here aren't history buffs and wanting to be concise- during the battle Gen Lee was in command with Longstreet as the #2. One could honestly devote their entire lives to studying just this one battle but Lee & Longstreet's discussions are well documented and they frankly were polar opposites of how to proceed.

The one part I'll mention on that topic is a part of the battle that I'm sure many folks have heard of (even if they're not fans of history themselves) and that's Pickett's charge on the 3rd day of the battle. Pickett's Charge is often used as a metaphor for futile (and foolish) endeavors even to today. But on the 3rd & final day of the battle at Gettysburg- I reckon many don't know that Longstreet publicly argued with Gen Lee against that decision and in front of their subordinates (this part is actually fairly well represented in the movie).

Another factoid of interest (to me) is that even though it's gone down into history as "Pickett's" charge, Pickett fell under Longstreet's command and he was given the task by General Lee to command the assault. Longstreet disagreed so adamantly with the order that when Pickett asked Longstreet to give the command, he could only nod in his direction (another part well documented).

(This is starting to get long so I'll break up the story here and continue on a future post).

Ok, so of all the different rabbit holes to dive into, this week’s chasm happens to be axe handles. I prefer a double bit for splitting wood and have always had one around that just worked. It swung well two handed and was kind of an arm extension for single handed kindlin’ splitting. Well a kid we have help out from time to time broke the handle and dammit if I can find a good replacement that feels right. The old one was already tossed out when I got around to looking for its replacement, so that easy button of just comparing it to available ones ain’t available. Hardware store store handles feel like complete garbage. Anyone have a favorite axe handle maker?

Just a guy who likes to shoot - don't compete or anything. Looking to upgrade from the Tikka CTR 24" 6.5 CM that I've had for the last 7-8 years. But I'm a dad with a teacher wife so budget is important...so options are listed in increasing level of cost. Priorities with this new rifle is a 20" barrel for a suppressor and just setting round count back to 0 since I think mine is nearing being shot out (could still sell for a few bucks to a hunter or someone who isn't gonna put a ton of rounds down it). Still shoots 1/2 MOA with handloads as of right now, but it's a mile long with my can on it.

1 - buy a Tikka 20" CTR and stick my Manners stock on it (boring but affordable - would probably cerakote the new gun so would cost a few bucks)
2 - put a Bartlein on my Tikka (around $1300 with fluting, cerakote, gunsmithing, etc.)
3 - sell the Tikka for around $900 and buy a Horizon Firearms Vandal X or Prime (seem to be around $2300-$2400 street price, so nearly the same as option 2)

Which would you guys do?

I'm templating a new range ATM but there's nothing in the pam regards limits. For example our normal range is 8mm max calibre and 3319 ft lbs. No one knows how that number was arrived at.

Been using a Lyman Gen5 powder dispenser for about 8 years. Today had it setup and calibrated, double checked with my balance beams. Was running spot on. Then it started throwing heavy and I mean heavy. Cannot get it to calibrate. Anyone have any experience with one of these?
