Maven RS.4 5-30x56 Review

Maven has some of the sexiest looking scopes on the market in terms of build quality, materials, and styling. But don't let a hot body fool you. Like an exotic sports car the Maven RS.4 has serious engineering under the hood.

The RS.4 is Maven's scope for PRS competition or long range Western hunting. It offers many features optimized for long range enthusiasts. Maven offers it in MIL or MOA with a variety of Christmas tree and specialty reticles. I got the CFR-MIL reticle which is similar to the PR2 reticle on the Leupold Mk5.

The turrets are oversized and large diameter to provide quick turns to adjust dope and fine adjustments. The turret have a hidden tool-less locking top to allow the user to reset them. Under the elevation turret you'll find a black metal ring that can be dropped to engage a pin on the turret base to engage a precise zero-stop.

All the nobs and rings turn smoothly. The turrets offer precise tactile clicks that audible. The reticle illumination is powered by a CR2032 coin battery and is split between red and green settings with an off in-between brightness settings. The illumination dial layout is a little unusual with the highest settings in both red and green are on the same side of the dial. Unfortunately it's illumination is only so-so. Only the very central cruciform of the reticle is illuminated with a faint glow on the Christmas tree. The RS.4's brightest isn't noon-day daylight which a liability for certain lighting conditions.

The RS.4 has ED glass which gives it excellent sharpness, clarity, and color balance. Chromatic aberration was greatly minimized in all but the highest contrast conditions. Even in those extreme cases, I noted an orange fringe rather than a purple or green one. The eyebox was a bit unforgiving, even with the magnification dialed down to 10x. At 30x it's very tight, so it's imperative the shooter have a firm and comfortable cheek weld on their rifle.

The RS.4 is a beautifully designed scope with long range shooters in mind. Especially the kind of shooter who step out of their custom Cybertruck wearing their ironed T.A.D. outfits and matching Canadian Goose parka.

Firearms APA Custom Built Winchester Model 70 LA .300 Win Mag

This Winchester model 70 was custom built by American Precision Arms ( APA ) who no longer offers complete rifle builds. All of the custom built rifles from APA started around 5K back when they were offered! This model 70 long action is chambered in .300 Win Mag and the action was trued up and blue printed. It was matched with a 22" Schneider A3 heavy barrel that is threaded 5/8-24 tpi so your favorite suppressor will thread on perfectly. The bottom metal is a CDI detachable box magazine style that takes AI magazines for reliable feeding. The rifle comes with one 5 round AI magazine. The stock is a McMillan A5 and the rifle and stock have a custom camo paint job, the Harris bipod is included. Don't let this custom APA Model 70 get away from you.

SOLD SAKO TRG 22 6.5 Creedmoor

Sako TRG 22 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor like new in its factory box. The TRG 22 in 6.5 Creedmoor is no longer in production, making these rifles extremely hard to find. This TRG 22 is the all-black stealth configuration featuring a black stock and bolt with blackened barrel and action. The solid vault-like action is machined from special steel alloy. It has a TRG42.COM 1913 rail on the top of the receiver just waiting for your favorite scope. The sturdy bolt with three locking lugs feeds rounds flawlessly from the centerline of a detachable staggered 2-row magazine. The bolt lift is at a 60° angle for fast bolt throw on secondary shots. Don't let this SAKO TRG 22 get away from you. The rifle has been fired but as you can see in the photos it is great shape and is ready it's next owner and next trip to the range or hunting!

Pack for playing in the mountains.

Im not sure if this is the right place. I didn’t see a gear type subsection. I’m looking for another pack to take on my day long LARPing trips. My hunting pack is too big and my hiking pack is too small to carry spotting scope, warming layers, kestrel, etc. I’m looking at the attakpak website as I really like the fact that the belt is detachable from the pack as a stand alone unit. I generally carry my bono harness, smaller pack, and battle belt.

I generally play at around 9-12k feet and finding a good pack has cost me a lot of money over the years. Any recommendations in mind?

Why are all scope reticles black?

Does any scope manufacture make a white reticle? If not, why not? I get that many scopes have the ability to turn the reticle to green or red, but why not just a plain white crosshair reticle. Educate me. I shoot BPCR silhouette and my reticle blends into the silhouette and leaves me with no point of hold. I need a white reticle for ref on the black silhouettes.

Savage Salvaged: MDT Chassis + Arken Glass = Budget Blaster Resurrection

This is a 1st-year Savage Model 10 .308 AccuTrigger, purchased new in Austin in 2003, cut to 18.5" and threaded for an old-school AWC ThunderTrap. It's what I cut my teeth on 20 years ago, back when we didn’t have good stock options or affordable glass for a young engineer starting a family with a wife at home cranking out great-looking boys (and a girl) who clearly benefit from her staggering good looks.

Speaking of good looks, what a way to bring this rifle back to life: an MDT XRS chassis and Arken SH4 4-16X50 GEN2.

It's honestly remarkable how good this rifle is for the money.

I had almost forgotten about this rifle (if you can believe it) because I threw the can on my .300WM for a while and sold the glass off the Savage. The barreled action laid around in the workshop for about 14 years.

Now, I’m excited all over again.

Range results will be shared later this week after the F1 madness in Austin dies down.

Stay frosty.
