Night Vision Russian night vision scope PN Gryphon/Griffon – search for info

The device is quite vintage - perhaps that's why the info about it is so limited.

The KBI in one of the imported SVD set included the Russian Night Vision scope PN Gryphon/Griffon-1 [ Прицел ночной ПН <Гриф> ] :
KBI import SVD 1994 set - 31 199$.jpg

I wonder if the owner of that SVD set could share some information about that NV scope? Or perhaps there are forum members who can post some feedback about this scope if they have had experience with it?

Why am I asking? I happen to acquire the Russian night vision scope PN Gryphon-1, made in 1995. I did not really need it but the seller gave the price of 80 EUR ( about 85 $ ) - it would be a sin not to take advantage of such an opportunity.
PN Gryf-1.jpg

I am still waiting for the shipment to arrive and in the meantime I am trying to enlarge my knowledge about this scope. And it is not an easy task.

I was told that the Gryphon/Griffon scopes were manufactured from 1993 till 1995 in Novosibirsk by a private entity which was a subcontractor of the NPZ optics plant. It was supposed to be a design for the civilian market derived from the PN-1 night sight developed by NPZ ( in 1993 Russian hunters were allowed to use a night vision scopes for hunting purposes - so a market niche for such equipment opened up ).

The owner’s manual ( I managed to find a scan of the manual in the Net – I hope that the one attached to my scope will be in a good condition so I can read it ) says that the Gryphon-1 scope is intended for the Лось ( moose ) hunting rifle and therefore the mount is intended for an 11 mm rail ( but in my set there is also another mounting rail ). The Gryphon-1 model does not even have vertical and horizontal correction drums - corrections of the reticle, according to the manual, are to be made using the sight mounting screws .

The Gryphon-2 version is equipped with the vertical and horizontal correction drums.

If there are more detailed information about that scope I'll be more than happy to hear it.

True Ballistic coefficient

OK...I have to get this off my mind...So, Please bear with me...Dont know if I am looking to deep into this or if it's been mentioned before... A Sierra Gold Medal Match King .308 has a ballistic coefficient of .462 and G7 0.224... When I plug in these values in a computation in an app, it is correct...at this time...I dont debate this at all...My problem is the declared values of BC are the bullets in the box. So, my understanding is the barrel bore has grooves and lands in it. I know the bullet has to spin...I get that...After the bullet leaves the end of the barrel it's BC is totally wrecked by the lands/grooves marks on the bullets outer casing...This has got to screw with the computations...Is this variable taken into account by the app or formulas of the day. I dont know how many lands are inside a barrel and if they are consistent in all barrels. If it is different then would it complicate things even more?

Battle of the Savage 110s

I’m looking to do a budget precision build and I am looking at two different flavors of Savage 110s, the Tactical and the Trail Hunter, but I’m not sure which to do, both seem to have advantages and disadvantages.

The Trail Hunter has a heavier barrel, and I like that, and I like the jeweling they did on the bolt, I know it doesn’t really do anything, but I like the look. But it does not take useful magazines (I define useful has 5 rounds and up, and typically AICS, if Mauser could do a 5 round magazine in the 19th century I will accept nothing less in the 21st century), the stock is non adjustable and kind of cheap looking, and I would need to add a scope rail and a different bolt handle. It is also $200 cheaper.

The Tactical has the right scope rail and bolt handle out of the box and takes real magazines, and the stock is adjustable (sort of) and I think the barrel is 2 inches longer, however it is also a thinner barrel, which I don't like, but it’s fluted and I like fluted. But it does not have the jeweled bolt and I really don’t like skinny hunting profile barrels, fluted or not, and while it’s decently accurate the reviews I have seen are not as glowing about it’s accuracy as they are with the Trail Hunter. It is also $200 more.

In the case of the Trail hunter I would have to get a chassis, the included stock is very flimsy and does not take real magazines and it is not adjustable. The Tactical has a much better stock and is set up for real magazines and it can be adjusted but I hate that style of adjustment, it seems very very old fashioned to me and can’t be done on the fly, ARs have had adjustable stocks for decades now and the modern ones are available with cheek risers too and for not much money, how is it that bolt guns seem to almost all be so behind and adjustable stocks cost more than most entry level rifles? Ultimately it would probably be replaced with a chassis too but it could wait a while, while the Trail Hunter I would consider unusable without it
(Magazines).

TLDR version:

Trail Hunter: $200 cheaper but needs about $100 in upgrades plus a chassis because the stock/magazines are horrible. Really good barrel though. Pretty bolt.

Tactical: More expensive but ready to use out of the box, and has a less crappy stock, I would still want a chassis but it could wait a bit. But the barrel is not as good and the bolt is ugly.

Basically I think the Trail Hunter is the better barreled action, but that’s all that it is, the stock is garbage, but the Tactical is usable out of the box but has a questionable barrel. The Trail Hunter is $200 cheaper but that comes down to only $100 cheaper after adding the scope rail and changing the bolt handle.

So which would you pick and why?

Speed in PRS

Yes i know, focus on getting hits first. However I am stuggling to aquire targets and get shots off in a timely manner. Average about 5 shots a stage 105 par.
What I have been focusing on (Spotting Missing, WIP)
Fundamentals: Make the easy shots Give me a fat target prone *PING*
Health. Just getting my physical fitness up to par.

Things that need to get better:
Position building--still lots of wobble--I can practice this at home though, so this is a skill I can work on.
Target acquisition, somehow I can never get my rifle on target in a timely manner. I zoom out at the start, but because targets are so hard to see sometimes I can't even recognize the grey target. I NEED HELP HERE (Yes I have a brand new prescription glasses, so that has been checked)
Speed. 10 stages, < 50 shots. Hit percentage was awful as well, but I'm leaving points on the table. So yes, 100% hit is great but at some point I can't spend all 100 seconds on 1 target. Any advice for a balance? I NEED HELP HERE.

Didn't help that I RO'd yesterday, so my focus was not on targets (that's on me) but my speed has been very consistently slow even if I'm at 50% hit rate (which I have done).

Optics Vortex gen 3 1-10 w/ bobro qd mount

Gently used vortex 1-10 mil with bobro qd mount. Department didn't sign off an lpvo so I'm swapping it out.

Rifle Competition Events NRL Hunter: Noob w/lots of questions

Any advice/tips for someone wanting to shoot their first NRL hunter match? I've shot PRS for about 10 years and am looking for something different. I just recently started watching some YT videos and it looks like it can go south quick if you're not prepared. Are these always shot in pairs, or are they mostly individual?

What advice and or tips can you give for someone who's never shot one? What indispensable piece of gear should I look at?
Bino/LRF or weapon-mounted/LRF? I don't have either yet....just standard LRF.
I think I'm good on most other equipment, but maybe a better tripod? I'm still rocking a Manfrotto!

Oh, and caliber? Been running 6-Dasher since 2016. Thinking of going with at least a 6.5 with 147's? I see something about "power factor"? Probably factory....I don't want to waste time/effort worrying about brass retrieval.

Thanks!

Vihtavouri Powders for reduced loads?

Hi All,
I was recently experimenting with some reduced loads in 308 using the 125 SST using Hodgdon's "60% of maximum load" data with H4895. I have several lbs of H4895 as well as IMR 4895, but for the sake of availability I used the IMR. In short, it works great! 41 gr of IMR 4895 under a 125 SST yields around 2625 fps, and is very accurate and mild-recoiling. I would highly recommend this load for a recoil sensitive shooter, and would be perfectly adequate to 200 yds.

As a result, I was thinking of getting several lbs more of IMR 4895, but holy smokes is it expensive! Also I have come to be more and more of a fan of Vihtavouri powders recently, and they are also less expensive and clean burning.

Has anyone used any of the Vihtavouri powders for lower case fill/reduced loads? Have you had ignition issues or inconsistent velocities? I was thinking either N140 or N150 would be appropriate for this.

I have used N110 in the 300 BLK in lower pressure loads without issue so I don't imagine there will be an issue.

If no one has tried it I may just get a lb of each and share my knowledge!
