Thank You Bear Pit (no really!)

Hello, I'm new to SH and this is my first post. I hope this is the "Bear Pit" where posts should be placed if unsure of proper forum? Assuming so, here goes:

I am somewhat new to long distance shooting though I have some understanding of the concepts and have taken a couple of courses. Prior to taking those courses, I purchased a few different types of 50BMG ammo (I had the money, but not the knowledge). I bought AP, API, Ball and what was referred to as "Solid Brass Sniper Match" ammo from 50BMGSupply.com. The ammo arrived without any ballistic info (no bullet weight, BC, etc.). At that time I was unaware of the importance of knowing those things for accuracy's sake so a lot of time has passed since I received it. I have since requested ballistic info from the online source I purchased it from but haven't received a response yet.

Can someone provide me with details as to how I can best determine the key ballistic information for each of these different rounds? I'd prefer a minimal cost approach (fewest shots fired etc), because I don't have the spare cash I had at the time I bought the ammo. If there are "low cost but only moderately accurate" and "higher cost/effort but highly accurate" ways of determining, I'd appreciate if both could be shared.

Additional info that may be helpful: I have a Barrett M107A1, and ready access to a 200 yd range (I know that is not much distance). I am also working on access to some private land that has more distance, but not yet sure how far or when I will have access. I have a Kestrel 5700 Elite, laser rangefinder, and should be able to gain access to a chronograph and appropriate scale if necessary.

Thanks for any assistance!

Why do you need Ballistic info for 200 yards?

Thanks for your reply. It is a 50BMG M107A1. I want the ballistic info so that I can accurately shoot at much longer ranges. I mention the range only so that the responder(s) would know what I have available to me if needed for calculating. I want to be able to use my Kestrel, after obtaining the correct ballistics, to determine elevation at any given (longer) range.

You are so dead...

And I mean that in the best way. As a friend. Or at least a neutral commentator.

But did you have to go post that here?

Well, if you live through this, welcome to SH! It's a great place.

This is just not how you start here.

Or is it?

Ok I'm sorry....

I'll help you, even though I only read three words from your post.

You don't need a chronograph, they aren't accurate. Actual dope is what you need. The bullet doesn't lie.
Unfortunately, you do need a lot more than 200 yards, unless you are establishing dope on a 22lr.
Find somewhere you can shoot all distances from 300 to 1000yds, then I'll tell you more.

UH OH! Is this for real? If so, hurry, run your ass outta here as fast as you can carry your 107!! The pit is the place you come when your skin is feeling thick and you want to get beat on.

As mentioned, stupid questions is the chat room for your question.

If you are low on cash and new to LR shooting the .50 may not be your gun. You might think of something a little more cost effective to hone your skills before going to the big daddy. I mean a girls first trick shouldn't be Long Dong Silver. She's best working up to that before she gets broke. You could sell the 107 and ammo and get a real nice rifle and a bunch of match grade ammo. Hell, I'll trade you straight up for a GAP 10 and 1000 rnds. I'll include all the trajectory charts you want and the magic recipe for accuracy.

50 BMG doesn’t really need ballistic info. It’s pretty much dead on to 1000 then After that just hold a little high. As long as you are close to what you are shooting at it’s pretty much a hit. It has so much energy through the air it will destroy anything within 3’ of it as it flys.

Well guys, I have to say I'm very disappointed. I'm pretty think skinned, and knew I'd need to be even if I were asking an "intelligent" question. But for a shooting web site in which knowledgable shooters are supposed to have and provide insight/feedback/etc., I have received hazing (which is fine, even funny and welcome), but no actual assistance. If "you can't get there from here" is considered a worthy reply to nubies, then feedback thus far has been right on track.

1) It is the Pit, not for the thin skinned as stated.

2) Use the search function prior to... for lack of a better term, stepping in the smelly stuff.
3) Sell the Barrett and ammo. Not a cheap caliber to shoot,
4) Read and read and search for "best caliber, best scope, for the ranges you intend to shoot

5) Welcome to the Hide and the Bear Pit 😘

so I’m going to to give you an example of how your first 2 posts soundedUsing another sport as a comparison.

guys I bought this Pro Rally Cross car a while back. I called the manufacturer to see what kind of gearbox it has in it, I know I’m supposed to shift it somehow but haven’t heard back. I’m taking it to the local car meet where we are going to do 1/8 mile drag races. I don’t want to burn up the tires testing it out, but how fast should I expect this car to go and how do I make this car change gears?

As mentioned twice already, you should post this in the “Stupid Questions” sb-forum. That was real advice that will get you answers, not that they will necessarily be what you want to hear.

Also, when you do start a thread there, you need to include what the actual ammunition brands and projectile weights actually are for each. Otherwise without good information from you, You cannot expect very good information in return. As the saying goes, “ garbage in, garbage out.”

You’re welcome

I don’t have that info, which is why I asked. I’ll take your advice and try that forum.

Try taking pictures of the boxes so that you and we know what products you’re asking about. Then try googling (or bing or bing-bong or duck duck goose) those products with the necessary question in the search.

I can see that. Didn’t mean to come off that way.

so what I’m getting at you bought a pro racing car and you are asking how to work a clutch and a manual transmission. You are in way over your head.

sell that rifle and buy something more manageable. You are wanting to play in the big leagues when you have no concept of the basics of how the sport is even played. You have to play little league before you get to MLB

I never believed the stories I read in Penthouse until this happened to me.....
I read what happened to you in the squirrel section. I still don’t believe that in the same room you managed to corral three triplets named Natasha, a Shetland pony, a dwarf, an emu, 4 stoats and a sex therapist names Tony. I read it. I still don’t believe it.
