SAKO TRG-22

In both scope base and mount? That’s a nearly $600 solution and I don’t understand what a Near mount gets me over a similar American or European (big Era-Tac or Tier One fan for some reason) mount.

That isn’t an option, I have my reasons. Move forward with the assumption that Spuhr doesn’t exist.
Plz share.

Near is one of the highest quality systems out there, and that easily equates to maintaining zero, and providing repeatability. Plus, Near offers some custom options that the other manufacturers don't.
I guess I don’t get what removing the stock pic base for a Near base with a Near mount gets me. Sure, maybe some more slope/inclination I presume? Could you please elaborate on why this is your opinion over other mounts using the Near base or specifically the steel Sako mount with 30 MOA slope built in?

I can absolutely tell the base is high quality and has machining to matches the factory recoil lug recesses, but I haven’t seen much on the mounts. Especially now with tactical doodads and such being common.
Plz share.
It’s not germane to the discussion, but it’s summed up as personal preference.

Unless Sako has changed the factory rail, which was too short, and for me adding the Near rail gave me more rail length to have more available rail space for moving optics in a more forward position vs. having to add more spacers to the butt stock LOP.

Factory LOP is just about fine for me. The original rail came cantilevered about an inch past the action with the sufficient eye relief for my scope, though I would prefer more inclination.

We’ve gotten off track let me restate my question since I have a unimount of my choice.

I am wondering if there are folks with experience using the Sako direct mounts instead of a pic rail+unimount and if so, why they chose the Sako option.

It seems to me you are leaving out information in your question for some reason and that makes it kind of curious...

The Sako factory rail attaches to the action without a pic rail, which incidentally a Spuhr ST- does too, but "requires" Optilock rings.
Optilock rings are available in 1", 30 and 34 mm.

Yes I have experience with the Sako rail and I choose Spuhr because it does all and everything the Sako rail does and more:
Attaches to the action without adding a pic rail.
Is a monolithic construction and very solid.
No laping needed.
Comes in all different tube sizes and heights.
With optional cant.

Why choose something inferior?

I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding you or you’ve just breezed past what I’ve said previously. I don’t want a Spuhr - period end of story, I have addressed it move on not sure why you can’t? Please stick to the question regarding Sako p/n S151F972 vs any pic rail (likely a Near) + quality unimount.

I'm just trying, in a circumspect way I'll admit, to understand why you would consider using something that although it is very good has some considerable drawbacks..

No Spuhr, got it. I just used the Spuhr as a reference in my last post.

The Sako rail is very good. Kind of QD with no POI shift. If your main tube is 34 mm, the rings will not have a plastic insert and need to be lapped or they might damage the scope finish.

If you choose not to use this, my personal preference is to use a unimount that does not require a pic rail... And why buy a Near pic rail when Sako has their own?

Anyway, good luck with what ever you decide to do .

I've been using the Sako direct mount on my TRG. I have not seen any reason to switch (to a Spuhr or any other mount) since I don't have the need to attach any auxillary sights etc. In my experience, the Sako mount does the job it's supposed to.

I assume you mean the aforementioned mount with the rail. The 34mm rings indeed don't have plastic inserts but I would not go as far as stating the need to lapped. Sure, more precaution and care should be taken with the Sako rings than e.g. Spuhr, but I have not seen the need to lap my rings with the several 34mm scopes I have mounted so far. Have not had any marks on my tubes and they have been solid in heavier recoiling rifles also.

I also prefer the direct-to-dovetail-mounts, since I don't have the need to switch optics between rifles and would rather not add a layer of fasteners between the scope and rifle. I also understood this was TheOE800's intention as he was refering to the S151F972 direct mount.

soooo....
the TRG42 .338 here appeared to have a chrome lined barrel
then I was reading the MANUAL and it said 'ok to use bronze brush"

"Replace cleaning tip with a bronze
bore brush soaked in bore solvent"

Then I called Baretta and they said...it is CL.
then they said its NOT CL and finally settled on its NOT CL!

I am wanting to use jb bore cleaner to get all this copper fouling out!

thoughts ??

Sako barrels are not chrome lined. As far as getting copper out of a barrel, I have never found the need.

Use BoreTech Eliminator to remove copper. It works slow, so leave in the bore for a couple hours, and repeat.

The TRG is a great rifle. I would not say they shoot as good as an AI out of the box, but very few guns do. In general they are tremendous guns and shoot great with all kinds of ammo. Very forgiving.
That hasnt been my experience. Sako shoots every bit as good as any AI I’ve shot. But both are solid.

Could be right. I have only had a few Sako's. My Sako's have always shot around 1/2 MOA consistently. I have shot AI's that shoot 1/4 more often. But that's what I have seen, everyone's experience is different. That said the Sako's are 1/2 the price, so it's a win win in my book. That M10 is on my list!!!

You gotta know I love Sako's!

I’d move an M10 but wow, that sucker is expensive...I’d have to sell 2-3 to pay for one of those things.

Aren’t they like $15k or something stupid?

Has anyone tried a 16 or 18" barrel on their TRG? I have been seriously considering the KRG 16.5" barrel for mine, but worry I won't like it and think that I should just go with the 20".

In 308, 16" would be a light compact shorty. In any other factory caliber a waste of speed.

10k ish is right on. I have a black on order since January and that is my number. It's suppose to be showing up right about now.... window was 6 to 8 months.

I saw one for 10k ish. Might have gone up?

This is where I wish KRG offered more options for their barrels. They only offer 16.5 and 20. I know the 20 will offer me approximately 100 extra yards before going transsonic, but part of me is attracted to the handiness of a 16.5 barrel with a folding rear stock. Down side is that I can (at this time) only afford 1 barrel so I had better be happy with me choice.

anyone know if there's a way to straighten the pre-2013 trigger so its straight...like the post 2013 models ?

I’ve been looking/waiting for this too. I don’t think it would be difficult for someone with the design and manufacturing capabilities to make a flat replacement shoe.

old reply sorry...
I played with my powder charge just a bit.. and BOTH my 42's shoot
300 win mag = 208 grains bergers = .157 MOA
300 win mag = 215 bergers = .144 MOA (300 group was .453) - 5 shot group
338 LM = .165 MOA @ 100 yards
If I miss; I know it's me.. just the way it's supposed to be
btw - stock berger ammo 215's (back when they made them) shot 4,5,6 out of my brand new rifle grouped .274 moa (group .287". factory berger ammo
I LOVE BERGER AMMO.. stuff is amazing.

anyone got a pic of TRG - A1 bottom stock area where the adapter comes off and the rear MONO pod goes on?

Sako's playing a joke with me.
It appears to be Pic rail attachment..but its NOT!

Capture_trg22a1.JPG

The M-10 monopod uses the edge dovetail to secure. There is a large cross bolt housing that needs the cutout you can see in this pic. A little machining is all that’s required to fit it on a regular pic rail.

^ thanks folks very helpful.
i figured it needed some kind of milling to get it to fit on standard pic. Sako got me!

right - that thing is a work of art. all the welding that went into it!
I’ve found their folding buttstocks to be loose and wiggly, frankly. From the recoil pad/shoulder plate to the monopod leg. Definitely not worth the price that Beretta wants.

purchased the 20" 308 from EuroOptic a few years back for Thanksgiving if i remember.
should have got the Sako bipid. mistakes happen. the rifle is my number 2 favorite, it shoots every reload i've tried...

I haven't experienced that issue on my folder for my 338LM TRG 42

My first serious rifle was an older TRG, one that came from the factory with a stainless barrel and a blued action. BY FAR the most comfortable and consistently accurate rifle I ever owned. I foolishly sold it. I ended trying a desert tech SRS, AIAX then a custom and I’ve yet to find anything that’s as enjoyable to shoot as the TRG. I found the factory buttstock more comfortable but the lack of quick adjustments led me to the W3 folder which I thought was awesome.

Currently on the lookout for another one. I miss that trigger!

that's very surprising to hear for me as well. this thing is welded steel construction and solid lockup.
Everything that’s welded is solid. Look at the boss/button for the vertical adjustment of the butt plate - that is what wiggles, causing the attached buttplate to wiggle. Monopod when extended has a bit of play between the arm and the hinge.

I concurr. The standard stock on the TRG is awesome and only vanity and being able to remove the bolt before transport (legislative requirement) without tools made me get the KRG folder (that is awesome in itself).
