More vintage F class fun

We made the trip again to southern New Jersey to shoot a 600 yard F class Sunday. This time around Joe shot his Springfield 03A1, I shot my M40A1 copy. Conditions were very squirrelly, but we gave a good accounting of ourselves. Looking up and down the line at all the rigs and gear, I felt like we had shown up at an Indy race in a VW beetle. Didn’t care, the target went in the pits every time we pulled the trigger. This is too much like fun

Once upon a time, I shot cross course with an 03...
88 rounds....

By the time I got to 600 prone, I started going down... shot middle expert though.. never could advance until the m14... got high expert with it. It was a joy...

Did ok on 600 any any VS cross course beat to shit by 600...

Then I went back to a bolt, heavy m70. With mercury recoil reducers... glutton for punishment.. I was.

@FatBoy
I'm looking for a c-stock 03, to scope, like yours, ok with a clone. Any suggestions ?

I haven’t seen any in a year. The Minnelli ones are decent when In stock but they’re light as they’re new growth so you’ll have to stay on top of your action screws until it settles down. The

The few rifles Tim is building now, he is rebuilding stocks from broken scraps. He does a damn good job though, you’d never know unless you know what to look for. I would have never imagined we would see 1903 parts dry up in my lifetime but here we are…

. In the pits I heard one guy say to his buddy, did you see the springfield? Theres was a 40 on the line too.
Most shooters are in their own little world, but others got a kick out of the rifles, and appreciated what we were doing.

I shot a 600 yard F-class club match with a Mosin 91/30 one time…with iron sights. It was fun as hell. Don’t remember my score but I stayed on the backer the whole time at least. It shot flat and beat me half to death. What’s not to love.

I have a Mosin PE sniper that needs a good workout, that may have to be the next rifle up!!

Nice going, Flint.

I love shooting the old rifles, but usually do it against other old rifles. Kudos to you and Joe for going all in against the modern stuff.

Say, is that a Weaver T scope on your 40? If so, what power?

Thanks Calfed, we both go with the attitude of let’s just go have fun.
Yes it’s a Weaver T-10 the predecessor of the Unertyl 10X. The optics are great.

It's all about having a good time. I seem to notice more older rifles showing up here and there at club matches. I think attitudes have changed in the last few years, and I'm glad to see it.

I had, and shot, an '03 in N/M XC at Cherry Ridge in NJ. ...And yes, it pounded me silly.

I had had a second staging Laparotomy (Non-Hodgkin's, and then Hodgkin's) and the process left me somewhat depleted in Recoil Absorption capacity. It was a really flaky looking rifle, a cobble-up of an 03A3 with an 03A1 barrel, Upper Handguard, and sights setup. It was not a stellar shooter, but it was what I had, so I shot a few matches with it. When I entered Chemo, I sold it; I wouldn't own a rifle that I could not shoot.

But I pulled through the second Lymphoma and went on to get my DCM Garand.

The rest is legend...

RIIIIIGHT...

My son and I shoot old military rifles at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center. One of the matches was called the "Folsom Special"...10 rds @ 300, 10 rounds @ 500, 10 rds @ 600 and 10 rds @ 800. We generally used "as issued" Swiss rifles...me my favorite 96/11 and he has a favorite K31. I have to admit it has been a while, but we used to do pretty well with surplus GP11 ammo.

The matches were shot using Palma targets. "Open class" were as issued, but with scopes. My son and I shot as issued and usually shot pretty even, until the last match when he pulled pretty far ahead of me. He shot a 358/400 with 2x's @ 800 yards. I shot 345/400. He bested a few of the Open Class shooters and came within 3 of tying the as issued class winner.

Now I need to try it with my 40X

IMHO, a major component of the N/M Course success is preparation. Knowing what comes next, preparing for it, and then doing it right that one time for real.

Lots of folks will tell you that their rifle is the best; and they'll all be right, for themselves. The gun is very important, but prep and skill set are indispensable.

For me, my Garand was doing me fine back while I was shooting N/M.

This weekend we’re shooting the Dean Herron Memorial Match at AEDC. Traveling Plaques go out for match winner, high F class and the most coveted “Wood and Steel” award, which is shot with an M1, M1A or a vintage sniper rifle under NRA rules for Service Rifle and Vintage Snipers. 3 x 600y. (Dean won the Farr Trophy with an M1A)

Edit: all wood and steel vintage SR rifles are allowed under SR or vintages sniper.

For anyone who has tried to keep their head in the proper position behind an 8x Unertl (or repro) while slung up in an -03A1 I recommended you try at least once for the full 60 shots. Makes you appreciate the modern ergonomics we have today.

Exactly!! But that’s what makes it fun and keeps it interesting

Tim got me today. He shot an M1A NM with irons and took me by 3 points.

This rifle hammers for 7-9 shots then it really opens up. All three matches were basically identical. I’m going next weekend to shoot a match off a bag to see if it’s the barrel or if it’s me getting tired, but I’m pretty good at calling my shots and have been an NRA HM for almost 20 years. That said, this thing is a different animal, I can’t rule out me being the failing part…

Still, had a lot of fun. Talk a huge amount of shit. Ate some crow. Good day.

I shot a couple of F-class matches with my M24 sniper rifle with it's original 10X Leupold. It gave a good accounting with 117LR. Every shot would have been painful even when they were not 10's or X's.
