Police later located Nathaniel at a friend's house, where he had fled to after the murder occurred and his friend's family had pressured him to turn himself in.
From the onset of the investigation, detectives had OVERWHELMING evidence that Nathaniel was the perpetrator and no mysterious masked assassin existed. Nathaniel had blood splatter from his dead mother all over his shirt, as well as defensive scratches on his face and arms made by his mother as she desperately fought for her life. Surveillance video from a neighbor's property also showed no masked killer running away, but instead, showed a blood soaked Nathaniel getting into his car and driving away after committing the deed.
Nevertheless, Nathaniel was brought in for questioning so detectives can establish guilt and hopefully have an open-close case. 23 year old Nathaniel Shimmel was unemployed and still lived under the supervision of his mother, where he spent the entire day every day playing video games instead of trying to find employment. On that fateful day, Michelle Shimmel had had enough of her loser son's unmotivated and wasteful lifestyle and confronted him about it, leading to him launching his fatal attack upon his own mother.
