And he acted like a spoiled 5 yesr old.Ah, John McEnroe. I'd pay good money for you to go back in time and tell that to this face.
McEnroe is the GOAT of the modern era with more combined titles and the best winning season - than anyone. Most people do not know that.
At 18 he larked into the junior tournament at the French Open, won there, in both Singles and Mixed dubs, and during hitting with some of the top men for practice he realized he could hang. He then won qualifiers into the main draw at Wimbledon and lost to Connors in the semis.
The next year not only played at the college level, committing to his school, leading his team to the NCAA win, but finished 4th as a professional.
At 20 he won his first major beating the two dominant players of the era, Borg and Connors, at the US Open.
In 84, he went 82-3 - the best ever for any tennis player.
There are few athletes who have ever dominated like this - Muhammed Ali is about the only closest one.
His parents had high expectations:
"Kay quickly instilled a no-quit attitude in him. Once, after he fell off his bike and hurt his arm, she told him to grit his teeth and go play tennis. Three weeks later they discovered that McEnroe had actually broken his arm. "We were rookies at the parent job," his father said, "but we got better at it."
