And then the viruses adapted and mutated quickly into the relatively harmless colds that are still with the population right now. COVID is already well into it's coexistence phase. It is never leaving the population, and there always will be peaks and lows in infections depending on seasons, and each successive variant will be more infectious, but almost never causing any serious illness or death. It is yet another strain of common cold now, to join the 7-8 other strains of colds that are going around at any given time.
