Chickens are raptors and will select bugs/mice way before plants.

Sorry for being serious.

Bugs eat plants. Mice eat seeds and bugs. Chickens eat mice bugs and seeds.

Plant-based meat!

Go far enough down the food chain and we are plant based meat. Just reprocessed a few times.

Remember that when the apocalypse happens and we are eating vegans. They are really just naturally processed plants and will be fine with the right spices and a balanced side diet of dandelion greens and wild grapes.

One of the best scenes out of the movie, "The Paths of Glory."

I don't speak German but I believe this is the best translation for the lyrics.

A faithful soldier, without fear,
He loved his girl for one whole year,
For one whole year and longer yet,
His love for her, he'd ne'er forget.

This youth to foreign land did roam,
While his true love, fell ill at home.
Sick unto death, she no one heard.
Three days and nights she spoke no word.

And when the youth received the news,
That his dear love, her life may lose,
He left his place and all he had,
To see his love, went this young lad...

Oh mother, bring forth a light,
My darling dies, I do not see,
That was indeed a faithful hussar,
He loves his girl a whole year.

And when he came to his darling,
Very softly, she gave him her hand,
The whole hand and much more,
Love never came to an end.

"Greetings, greetings, my dearest!
What are you doing alone in bed?"
"Thanks, thanks, my faithful lad!
With me it will soon be in the grave."

"Greetings, greetings, my fine boy.
Let me go to the cool grave."
"Oh no, oh no, my dear child,
Because we are so in love. "

"Oh no, oh no, not so fast,
Because we are two lovers;
Oh no, oh no, my heart tells me,
The love and faith must last longer."

He took her in his arms to hold,
She was not warm, forever cold.
"Oh quick, oh quick, bring light to me,
Else my love dies, no one will see."

And when the maid had died,
He puts on the funeral bier.
Where do I get six young boys,
To carry my dear to the grave?

Pallbearers we need two times three,
Six farmhands they are so heavy.
It must be six of soldiers brave,
To carry my love to her grave.

A long black coat, I must now wear.
A sorrow great, is what I bear.
A sorrow great and so much more,
My grief it will end nevermore.

Holy crap!! 785 is one helluva a lot of subs! Hard to imagine they had that many,

Doenitz was building with the intention of starting the war c. 1943. That would have given the Kriegsarine time to build the fleet needed to dominate the Atlantic.

Hitler overruled and started in 1939 on the basis that the allies (not yet allied) would build more, too. And so he wanted to start unprepared… but better prepared than England, France and the U.S. The Austrian corporal felt he could win by striking first, even though not ready.

IMHO, he was not wrong. His mistake was going after the USSR before reducing England. Which he could have done in another year.

But by then the Japs had brought the USA in and Hitler was confident (overruling hingeneral staff again) that the US was a nation of mongrels and negroes and Jews which he could easily defeat.

The house painter really was a mentally-ill military midget. But he came damn close to pulling it off.

If he had let his general staff run things, he probably would have had his Reich. But he thought he knew more because he was a WW1 trench runner. It’s one of the reasons the allies did not target him. It was better for the war effort if he was alive and calling shots than if a subordinate took over and let the generals run things. The German General Staff was very competent.

Richard Overy’s book “Why the Allies Won” goes into that. Another book whose title escapes me was also excellent on Hitler as CinC. Deep dive into the Fuhrer as military leader and what a twat waffle he was!

They got their ass handed to them at the Coral Sea and at Midway. Wake Island defended itself from the first attack and had there been more support, they would have won the second attack.

During the battles of the Savo Sea, US Destroyers closed to feet with the IJN capital ships and fought with not only deck guns, machine guns, AA but even small arms. The IJN ships commanders ran away rather than crush the US ships.

Even the IJN admirals were impressed with the bravery of US fliers.

Many IJN fliers deliberately avoided battle by flying away.

In hand to hand fighting on Guadalcanal the marines dominated. There are lots of reports of Japanese small units deliberately avoiding movement to contact. The Japanese infantryman was beaten and abused most every day of his life.
OK so I'm a little late.

They did NOT get their ass handed to them at Coral Sea. It was a draw. Although since it technically stopped the Japanese for the first time, it was more a moral victory.

Midway: Ok they was grade A ass whoopin (via a little luck and some codebreaking, and Japanses battle doctrine).

Guadacanal: Thats when we took over. After Midway, Fleets were roughly on par. And the last thing you want to do with the good ol USA is get in a meat grinder where you chew up ships/pilots/resources. And Fall of 42 was just that: a meatgrinder.

Then there is this "What if" (we lose Midway)

So while Midway was important, many of us are of the opinion that the Guadacanal campaign was the turning point.

Or Pearl Harbor, because you just pissed the shit out of the #1 economy in the world.

Both Grandpas fought in the Pacific.
One got to ride the "new" Yorktown home!
