Can’t speak much about other manufactures, but Benz is who sold all their old tech and copartner the startup of Tesla. Kinda foolish of them in hind sight seeings the competition they helped create.

Tesla is just the first to turn it loose on the public. There’s a ton of cool tech that for whatever reason barely sees the light of day.

This is a Tesla model Y battery. It takes up all of the space under the passenger compartment of the car.

To manufacture it you need:
--12 tons of rock for Lithium (can also be
extracted from sea water)
-- 5 tons of cobalt minerals (Most cobalt is made
as a byproduct of the processing of copper
and nickel ores. It is the most difficult material
to obtain for a battery and the most
expensive.)
-- 3 tons nickel ore
-- 12 tons of copper ore

You must move 250 tons of soil to obtain:
-- 26.5 pounds of Lithium
-- 30 pounds of nickel
-- 48.5 pounds of manganese
-- 15 pounds of cobalt

To manufacture the battery also requires:
-- 441 pounds of aluminum, steel and/or plastic
-- 112 pounds of graphite

The Caterpillar 994A is used for the earthmoving to obtain the essential minerals. It consumes 264 gallons of diesel in 12 hours.

Finally you get a “zero emissions” car.

Presently, the bulk of the necessary minerals for manufacturing the batteries come from China or Africa. Much of the labor for getting the minerals in Africa is done by children! If we buy electric cars, it's China who profits most!

BTW, this 2021 Tesla Model Y OEM battery (the cheapest Tesla battery) is currently for sale on the Internet for $4,999 not including shipping or installation. The battery weighs 1,000 pounds (you can imagine the shipping cost). The cost of Tesla batteries is:

Model 3 -- $14,000+ (Car MSRP $38,990)
Model Y -- $5,000–$5,500 (Car MSRP $47,740)
Model S -- $13,000–$20,000 (Car MSRP $74,990)
Model X -- $13,000+ (Car MSRP $79,990)

It takes SEVEN years for an electric car to reach net-zero CO2. The life expectancy of the batteries is 10 years (average). Only in the last three years do you begin to reduce your carbon footprint. Then the batteries have to be replaced and you lose all the gains you made in those three years.

The truth is far better than the fiction we are all being told !

Here’s a fairly comprehensive report on why a lot of this is inaccurate…. When I say inaccurate, it’s an accurate in that it doesn’t compare apples to apples: Primarily the resources that are required to go into production of any internal combustion engine based vehicle. The primary difference being those minerals required for the battery pack, versus the materials present in a combustion engine.


Now, I’m not seeing EV’s are God’s gift to the world… the truth is that internal combustion engines are not gonna be replaced in extremely remote locations… unless somehow those remote locations have massive energy generation capability.

However, I find it really ridiculous that people run around trying to say how awful EVs are when the truth of the matter is they do fulfill a slot when it comes to metropolitan area transportation.

Not to mention, they’re insanely fast and very few ICE vehicles can touch them from a performance standpoint.

100 percent!! In certain circumstances EV’s are great, but this mandate crap is horse shit!!! They are not even remotely close to prime time replacement.

Now for the kicker, EV’s have zero, zero restrictions or performance requirements and are given price breaks and credits left and right. If they are as good as the gubmint and manufactures are pushing, how about they stand on their own merits and a level playing field. Then let’s see where the chips fall.

List did a replacement battery pack under warranty on a Benz EQS few weeks ago….. please return your seats to their upright position and tighten all safety belts…..

That’s just the retail cost only, can’t show the dealer internal stuff.
Did not believe it. Looked up the part number. It’s 40,558.80 for the battery and 6652 for the core charge at Mercedespartscenter.

Mandates are always problematic…

You should’ve seen me given people at work crap about the fact that some of them actually thought forcing people to get vaccinated was totally fine… whereas, I said to them: “ it’s all nice and fine when it’s not something inside someone’s body but if you’re gonna start screwing around by telling someone they have to inject something into their body… Your violating their rights as an American.”

It’s a little different when it comes to the EV. Truthfully, I think a lot of the conversation related EVs will change when it comes to solid state batteries. If what Toyota is saying is true, we’ll see cars that are twice the capacity of what we have now… making them far more cost effective than ICE vehicles. Literally, if a battery tack suddenly allows for 700 miles range and charges in less than half the time (Toyota)… that will blow the crap out of almost any car with the gas tank… and it will blow away gasoline, powered vehicles, and their cost effectiveness.

My local MB dealer sells all parts AT 10% OVER LIST, My source in TX is 15% off list
if I remember correctly the Tesla model Y batteries around $25,000… I’d have to assume that a Mercedes was probably getting a different battery pack, where the battery packed out of a model S or model X vehicle, which is substantially larger Than the one from the model three or model Y.

Maybe they got some secret squirrel connections, but it was special procurement by VIN only to our dealership. I am a MB tec and that is straight out of Benz official system. You can call the half dozen other dealers in the Tampa, Orlando area to try your luck at if you like.

You are reading that correctly, Tesla and Mercedes on the same pack.

That’s what’s so laughable about people who argue my Chevy, Ford, Dodge, BWM is better. Got no idea how much these manufactures are in cohorts together behind the scenes.

That particular gem in the crate is for an older B class Mercedes that a was about $11k. Don’t remember all the particulars on capacity as I wasn’t the one working on it, but it’s a lunch box of a car with city driving range.
Just because it has a shipping label going to a Mercedes location doesn't mean it fits a Mercedes vehicle. The Mercedes dealership might have a body shop that is Tesla certified to install the battery, or the Mercedes service department might be Tesla certified. My son works for Tesla where they build the batteries and has never said anything about them making a Mercedes spec battery. They are so busy building batteries for their own production they don't have time to build them for anyone else.

You did see where I said I am a MB tec at a MB dealer and that it is in our service department this very moment and that particular crate went into a Mercedes B class ev? There is no speculation of what kinda sorta might be.

Back to what I said earlier about people arguing over what hood ornament is better… there is so much manufacture cross pollinating going on behind the scenes.

Yes Tesla build their own batteries. Yes Benz builds their own batteries. They also contract share. The $68k battery, not sure what plant that one is coming out of.

The EV battery in the crate that I posted is 100 percent joint manufactured by Tesla and Benz.

One of the things haven't seen anyone address during this riveting conversation about horsepower is, the parasitic draw just to spin a top fuel blower is almost 1000hp. It would take everything an SRT Demon 170 engine could do just to spin the blower for a top fuel car.

I'm curious about this from a lenders standpoint. Say your POS EV battery takes a shit. Costs 30-40k for a replacement......which you can't afford, yet the car payments keep rolling in. You say fuck it and let the bank repo the POS and your credit rating goes to shit. WTF are they gonna do with a basically worthless vehicle that no one wants to buy? I'm surprised banks want any part of these.
