Depends on how deep you're willing to go. If you kill everyone in the supply chain and then follow it all back to China and kill them too it will take many decades to rebuild it to where it is today.
You have to treat it like cancer, cut out everything a skilled surgeon can get, and then irradiate the fuck out of it till not a single cell is left.

Why should we care about the cartels in Mexico if we stop the flow of drugs? That’s Mexico’s problem. This whole conversation jumps over the obvious solution and goes straight to eradicating an issue that doesn’t exist if we do the important thing right. If we don’t then even if we were to eradicate every cartel another would fill the vacuum because of the insane profits.
I suppose it's a difference in how we view incredibly addictive and debilitating drugs. On the one hand some people think it's a choice and a matter of free will and liberty to put anything you want in your body. While this sounds good and comes from a liberty minded place, the reality is that these substances rob a person of their very free will and in short order all they care about is getting more to the detriment of everything else in this reality.
So, really, I frame it the same way that you do in as much as our liberty as human beings is what's at stake. People are going to do drugs, full stop. Fighting drugs is like fighting crime in general. It's an eternal struggle that will never end as long as there are humans to addict, and money to be made.
I think that fighting a synthetically made drug that comes from overseas is very different than trying to fight a naturally occurring weed, or drugs that can be refined/distilled from local or foreign plants. However, I think that societal impacts from any of it needs to be taken into account. It's not as simple as people want to make it, and I am skeptical about "education" as well. There is a shiton of anti-vaping education going on in schools today, and it is crazy how many kids are doing it. The cure is probably worse than the affliction.
I'm willing to look at and consider anything, but I think in terms of fentanyl, specifically, this is state sponsored and intended as a direct attack on our homeland. It kills and cripples our people while making our enemies billions of our dollars. I think it's high time we roll this shit up with the cartels in Mexico using the full power of our military, but not stopping there. Just replace Carthage with Cartels. Carthago delenda est.

Also, quite a few here have said to go ful libertarian and let the drugs kill off the addicts if that their choice, and that society would be better off. Well, in order to do that you need the cartels to run the drugs up to do just that. So, which is it - secure the border so that drugs are greatly diminished, kill the cartels for supplying demand in the country (and have more servicemen die to engage them) or let it in and let people choose? The arguments made over the years here are in conflict with each other. It's almost like some here are jumping around to the topic du jour and offering myopic, one-dimensional comments while being inconsistent.

I've long said legalize everything, with zero tolerance. Get popped for ANY crime, no matter how small, and you test positive for any substance, done.
Burglary? Dead. Assault? Dead. DUI? Dead. Shoplifting? Dead. Blue collar, white collar, dead. It'll sort itself out real quick.
Or as some comedians have suggested, make drug states. Fence off areas of the country and provide them will all the free drugs they can use. That too will sort itself out.

You would need to kill a ton of figureheads sure, but also lawyers, judges, politicians on both sides of the border plus all of SOUTHCOM. The lawyer who owns PornHub and his PE firm, as well as all of the engineering teams in Seattle who run their infrastructure, loads of folks with the ISPs and cloud service providers.
Then you'll need to bushwhack a large amount of folks working for unions and anyone involved in shipping, car manufacturing, chemicals, POLs, etc.

But we all know that the "gray" side of this will never be touched and that all that happens is some SMUs get sent in for high profile ops, we give the Mexicans some "wins" by letting their Marines and NP hit a few lower level guys, we bring RICO charges on some folks, maybe we bag a judge or a few cops, and then we put in a much scarier cartel just like we did in 2004.

With decreased demand, the cartels will start eliminating other cartel competition in order to keep their prices up. Once only one or two cartels are left, they will be a lot easier to eliminate.

I don't know, drive around here and look at the meth heads and all you see are poor. They go out and steel stuff, blow their unemployment checks and welfare or someone for a buck. Multiply the couple thousand from some crappy little town to 100,000 or more from cities and the money starts piling up. Looking at it from an individual perspective the rich pay/buy a lot. Looking at the big picture the little meth heads consolidated add up to some crazy numbers.
