Self mutilation, even if you pay someone else to do it, is indicative of serious crazy. Shit like that is at least as bad as facial tattoos and multiple facial piercings.
Throat tattoos, oversize ear gauges, and the ones mentioned above are a cry for help, or a sign of someone desperate for attention. We should recognize that, rather than saying "they are just expressing themselves".
Before I retired, one of my warehouse guys had many of these signs. Really good guy, great worker, but very troubled. I did what I could to help. I talk to him occasionally, and sincerely hope he is well.
