16-18 inch shorty rifles

Anyone have a short 300 BA bolt gun? Is there any point to it or is it just a bad idea?
Loved mine when it was a 16" 1:8 twist. Stupid accurate.

If you go shorter to something like 7-9" of barrel, get a 1:5 twist. You run the risk of losing accuracy with subsonics if the bullets not making at least 1-2 full turns in the barrel before exit. At least iny experience. And most plated bullets are still fine at subsonic speed with a 1:5 twist (just confirm with their manufacturer).

yup, that's what I meant. so what type of rounds to you shoot and how far out is normal for you to shoot with it?
Depending on bullet and what you’re tryna do. 400-500yds isn’t hard but it is really slow at those distances. Iirc I’ve been 600yds with 110gr. I like 200gr+ subs and 1/7twist and stay 300yds and below. Suppressed in a bolt gun it’s stupid quiet, you can hear the impact on a hog over the report.

ok, that's actually what I wanted to know so thank you. I think subs will be the primary food it eats but being able to shoot subs or supers is a big plus. What all bullet weights are used? I guess I could use some of my 308 bullets that I don't shoot anymore
like TGK Sierra 175gr in it for subs or IA there some bullets that do a lot better for subs?

I used Black Hills ELDM 108gr out of a 24" Proof Bull Barrel which was extremely accurate. I expect when I drop down to 16" barrel the speed will drop significantly, but hopefully accuracy will remain same,

A few shawties I fux with.

AT-XC. Currently 16.5 in 6.5 Creed
My Buddies 20in 308 Blue Printed 700 McMillan GAP ect ect
Defiance Deviant. Just under 20 on in 6 Creed. M24 Can

How's the ATX with that reflex can shoot? AEM30?

I had a miserable time with reflex cans and the Ops12 brakes on my bolt gun.

The ATX has a Tbac Magnus RR on it

The Defiance/AI chassis is an AE M24 can. Currently in a 6 creed. I had the barrel profiled to fit the can. It shoots well with 107 SMK right at 3k. I shot some factory Federal Match with Sierra 107s and they shoot lights out as well. I considered running them in a match honestly. Only reason I haven't is the can is fuckn heavy.

How do you like that Mack bros action? Is it shouldered pre-fit capable?

I'm a fan. I think Mack Bros do good work, especially for the price. It runs very slick and the weight is true to advertisement. Lighter than other Ti actions I've owned before. The only gripe I have is that it's set up for BDL box and 2.850" COAL so non-binder plate magazines with standard S/A cartridges might be a problem. For the mini-size ARC/grendel stuff I've been doing with it, it doesn't matter, but I notched the feed ramp in the mill anyway.

As far as pre-fit capability I can't say with certainty. I believe they hold the actions consistent enough for it, but I'm not sure if anyone is making prefits that will work. I need to compare the tennon print to an Impact 737-- I think they might be the same but I need to verify that.

I don't have a Mack Bros, but a friend does. He called Mack Bros, and it sounded like the newer actions are 'pre-fit capable', but some/all of the older versions are not. Unfortunately, it sounds like MB wouldn't provide a serial # or any actionable info that could be used to tell which "version" he had. For my friend, his gunsmith just measured his specific action, and now that smith can cut and send however many 'prefits' that action wants.
