Accuracy International AT Rifle AX Butt Conversion Pale Brown

The install was very straight forward, re-epoxy was no big deal (have alcohol soaked rag ready to clean up excess). The adj. comb height will work for me in the lowest position.

@JFComfort I would loctite those 2 screws on the cheek rest. After my first range trip I found that I was missing one and the other was loose. I picked up replacements at the hardware store and loctited them
In place.

I appreciate that. I’ll do that this evening when I get home.

How tight is your Atlas bipod attached? Any wiggle? I recall my old AIAT having some issues with my bipod adapter years ago before I sold it. Kinda thinking about getting another AIAT again seeing as it can take the AXMC's buttstock now.

I don’t have any issues with wiggle in my atlas bipod. The trick I have found is to back off the knob on the BT19 until the washer are completely free. Then tighten the knob down.

I did end up raising the scope from 1.125” rings to a 1.34” Spuhr mount. Now with the adj. comb in it’s lowest position it’s easy to get a proper sight picture.

Hummm. I’m not sure that’s really the right height mount. I think you should send it to me, with the scope of course, and I will send you the right height AI mount with a razor in it. :ROFLMAO:

I've got a working prototype of my low cheek piece. Waiting on a metal bracket and a final 3D print to confirm everything is good. It will swap out directly with the factory cheek piece, no modifications needed, and still give you side-to-side adjustment. Unfortunately there's no good way to keep the spare 4mm Allen Key, and it's pretty much impossible to use the rear flush cup location when the cheek piece is in its lowest position (unless you have an AXAICS chassis, in which case the flush cup is in a different location).

Total reduction in height is 0.350", which puts it almost exactly level with the top of the firing pin body (if you're looking for a reference). This should let you keep your current rings/mount on your AT after putting on the AX buttstock. It's the equivalent of being able to go from a 1.5" to a 1.18" Spuhr mount.

This will also be nice for guys running custom actions, trainer rifles, or Vudoo 22s in an AXAICS chassis where you may also struggle with getting a good cheek weld without super high rings. Or guys like me that like to use thick cheek pads like the Wiebad velcro version, which adds about 1/4" of extra thickness and would make using it on the AT/AX swap almost impossible. I'm not sure anyone will need it, but a long action AXMC version is also possible, it would just have the nose shortened due to the additional stroke of the long-action bolt.

First two pics are of the factory cheek piece:

Last three pics are of the low cheek piece prototype.

Just my eye... or do both brown and green buttstocks run a different shade than the AT’s stock color?

Yes, the green is very noticeable.

I called MHS, after some investigation AI doesn't sell the LH AX folder as standalone (I don't know why, they obviously make it), so I'll put a righty folder on my lefty AT. I may flip it at the hinge, don't know yet.

The green seems very noticeable that’s why I bought brown skins for my AT and threw on the brown buttstock. The brown is off a bit but it’s not super noticeable. I assume the black matches up but I have too many black guns as it is.

Skateboard tape on the mating surface will eliminate the wiggle.

So, I had two questions about this but my search brought up a link to Mile High, which answered one question...can this only be done to a folding AT rifle and apparently it can also happen to a fixed stock AT rifle. Cool.

My other question is this. Other than the AT rifle being quick change barrel, what about the chassis (mostly the butt stock) is different? I would really like to do this to my AICS 2.0 folder. Anyone know the answer to this?

It can be done to an AICS with some work.

@6brshooter is the man.

Are you asking about differences (other than the buttstock) between the AT rifle and the AT AICS? To my knowledge, the only difference is in the notch for the bolt handle (the AICS has a larger notch in that location to allow for larger (than AI rifle) bolt handles to clear). Beyond that difference, I can't think of a reason that this conversion couldn't be done on an AT chassis.

All the ai chassis, factory rifle and 700 aics, have the same stub on the rear of chassis centersection. Your main hurdle will be on how your current folder is attached to that stub. If its a newer at style aics, its held on by countersunk screws like the ax butt. If its an older aics, like mine were, it uses dowel pins and epoxy. Refer to linked thread from samb300. If you got any other questions or concerns, shoot me a pm.

Here’s a pic of mine pretty easy to do. View attachment 7011317

Me likey!

How close does the AX Pale Brown match the AT Pale Brown. In this picture is looks super close, but what about in person?

What height rail do you have your scope mounted to?

Did you have to make any knock-on modifications to get scope height higher/lower?

I know this is an old thread, but is there a way to buy an AT butt stock by itself? I have an AX with Vision now but wishing to try out thumbhole look... looked at many places but couldn't find anything for AT.

If I buy AICS 2.0 chassis, can I take the stock off and put it on my AX?

Quick answer is it depends.

Older AI rifles (like the AE MkII/MkIII, AW, and AX) used specific hinge and mounting systems that most likely interchange with each other but do not align with the modular rear end of, say, an AT-X type chassis.

The AT-X has a monolithic center section with a newer interface, and its modularity is built around tool-less adjustability and competition-focused ergonomics, not backward compatibility with older thumbhole stocks. You said you had an AX, so you would have to find another stock with a thumbhole butt stock end to swap with.

Assuming you found the folder hardware on here or eBay, for example, you would then have to use old school legacy thumbhole skins for an actual AI action that usually only comes with a full rifle (defeating the purpose here). If you speak to either Cameron at Mile High Shooting Accessories in Denver or Adam at Sporting Services in the UK (pay attention to the time difference), they may have some skins lying around and a compatible folder.

Both sets of people should be able to answer your questions although I do find MHSA to be out of stock more than SS for specific requests like this.

As to the folding stock add-on, people sometimes sell the old school hardware here or eBay when they upgrade to this model:

Make calls to both places asking. As to whether one fits into another, you pretty much have to stay in the same generation of your rifle for it to work short of some involved gunsmithing, which again, cost-wise, defeats the purpose. If money is no object, MHSA could quote on custom work as those guys do not shy away from a challenge. Just be ready to pay what MHSA quotes you and understand you cannot complain about pricing if you are asking for something like this. Good work costs good money and vanity is worth any price when you want what you want. Question is what will you do with the AI Vision stock you take off?
